Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament is the ultimate gaming experience, if you've got something under the hood. I tried the demo on my grandpa's 300 MHz AMD K6-2 and got about 5 frames a second at the lowest resolution & lowest texture quality! It lags a bit on my PIII-500, but it works just fine.
The game focuses on the multiplayer experience. The only single-player anything is with bots, or AI opponents that take the place of humans. UT is said to have the best bots, almost indistinguishable from good hman players. You can set their skill from Novice to Godlike, or set auto-adjust so they adjust based on your performance. When I do this, they get up to «Masterful» and start kicking my ass.
Beyond simple deathmatch (where each player is out for theirself shooting anything that moves), there are four other game types:
- Team Game: A deathmatch between 2-4 teams where you shoot only people not on your team. Friendly fire percentage is adjustable.
- Domination: Where 2-4 teams compete to tag «control points.» When you tag a control point, it turns you team's colour and you gain an increasing amount of points until another team tags it. This is my favourite mode of play.
- Capture the Flag: Two teams try to capture the other team's flag and carry it back to their base. I personally am not a big fan of this, because it takes about three hours per round, at least for me and my bots.
- Assault: I haven't played much of this, but the basic idea is that there are two teams. One tries to complete an objective, such as infultrating a battleship to blow up a dam, and the other attempts to stop them. Once the first team completes the objective, the second team does the same and tries to beat their time.
One final word on this «placeholder» UT page: mutators. Mutators change rules in games. For instance a mutator can turn everyone invisable, change all the weapons to a specific type, or lower the gravity. I usually play with low gravity and the InstaGib mutator, in which everyone has an inexhaustable weapon that has the power of (one shot == one kill). Pair that with JumpMatch and that's really something. You jump outside and it takes no less than 15 seconds to land again. Also, get the decalstay mod (which I will upload here by 2000-07-22). It makes damage to the map, such as bullet holes, missle burns, and splattered blood, remain instead of disappearing after 20 seconds or so.
