One of the many streams and mud traps at various sites, mainly at Willington GP (pictured here). Shardlow GP can be the worst for access, so you have to be ready to show some real dedication at these sites to find the birds, not well illustrated by Rob Hutchinson (below, at Shardlow). These little traps add excitement to an otherwise dull and birdless day in the Trent Valley! Many occassion I've ended up with a wet and muddied trouser leg and boot! |

Behind the birdwatching there is a reasonably academic person having finished university in Newcastle where I was busy getting a degree in Graphic Design. Obviously the birding up there was a lot better than my home county, Derbyshire, enabling me to find some great birds. Back in Derbyshire it is a different matter though, so I have turned my attentions to foreign birding, where I make at least 3 birding trips a year (one trip may last for 7 months though!). Theres nothing like 'real' birding in the rainforests of the tropics, spending hours waiting for a Pitta to hop across in front you. I now guide bird groups around my favoured continent, Asia, with Birdtour Asia (http://www.birdtourasia.com). I've lived my whole life in Littleover, in Derby, with a great garden, which has housed wintering flocks of Bramblings, even until May once, Arctic Redpoll during the invasion year with a flock of Mealies for 2 days, Waxwings, Hobbys and Osprey. I venture out along the Trent Valley most days, or when I can motivate myself to spend a few hours in the field, knowing I'm not going to see alot! Willington and Shardlow Gravel Pits have been my main local patches for years. My website is intended to show my passion for birding and photography, if you have any comments about anything to do with it, please don't hesitate to contact me.
