Wryneck, Willington GP, 4-6th Sept. This photo was taken by Rob Hutchinson early on 6th, as it just sat here for 5 minutes watching us watching it! Rob had found it on 4th, but I missed it that day, work commitments!! But luckily found it early on 5th for 40 minutes then again briefly in the evening. It showed again on 6th. Fantastic bird!

Little Egrets, Barrow GP, 12th Sept, 03. 4 birds present together is a rare sight still up here, only the third time I've seen this many together in the county, tok a while to get them all in the same view, seperated as 2 pairs, presumably the Willington pair joined the usual 2 here?

Little Egret, Shardlow GP, Aug 03. This bird was one of several birds on site this Summer, with a max of 5 being seen together. This was about the only time they allowed a close approach. Like most of the birds, this was a juv.

Gadwall - Shardlow GP, June 03. An excellent breeding season for ducks at Shardlow this year. We found a nest in early June, which sadly got deserted, but then this brood of 5 turned up and managed to survive to flying stage. Shovelar bred here too, with 5 young being seen on 2 dates at dusk, sadly they weren't seen again, but they were a sod to moniter being so secretive. Also 3 broods of Mallard of 3+ broods of Tufted Duck were noted

Little Egret, Willington GP, Sept 03. Same day as I saw the Wryneck on 5th. One of 2 birds present, which have been present on and off for over a month, probably involving several birds, as they range from Staffs to Barrow GP and beyond probably?!

Common Rosefinch, Carr Vale, June 98. A first for Derbyshire, found by MAB who seemed to have a great few years up there, much to the envy of the birdless Trent Valley! A very damp and dull evening produced good views of this bird, singing, eventually!

Black-throated Thrush, nr Chesterfield, Feb 97. This 1st winter male was present for several months during the winter, a confiding bird and superb county first, unlikely to be seen again I would assume for a very long time

Red-breasted Goose, Barrow GP, 19th Oct 03. A fabulous looking bird among the Canada Geese, this bird has been roaming around the south of the county for a few months now, its taken sometime for me to catch up with it!

White Stork, Willington GP, Apr 99. This bird was photographed late on in the day as me and ROH had just found it by Stork pool, so I had to run back up the lane to fetch the camera, then managed to grab a lift with MPR as he turned up just on time, the onlt time I've gone 50mph down there, scary.

Night Heron, Staunton Harold Hall, Dec 99. This escaped adult showed extremely well by the small fishing ponds here, as can be seen! A great looking bird, shame about the ring!

Grasshopper Warbler, Willington GP Jul 03. This juv bird was one of a brood of 4 present on the Old Ash for a few days, ending a great Summer for this species at this site, with 3 reeling birds in the Spring. At one point I had 4 -5 birds reeling all around me with the juvs attempting to call!

Bluethroat, Beeley Moor, May 01. This singing male was present for one day, enabling those (not me though!) who missed out on the Long Eaton bird to see one in the county again. A cracking bird, often hard to see as it run amongst the heather

Kumlien's Gull, Ogston Reservoir, 28th Dec 05. This adult was a surprise find in this evenings roost. Oggy has been superb this winter, tonight held a Glauc, 2 Icelands and a Caspian. Upto 4 Caspians have been in per night recently

Grey Phalarope - Carsington Water 16th Oct 03. This delightful bird was present on the conservation island, so it didn't get disturbed, allowing great views, but giving us wet feet! Present 2 days, this on its 2nd

Ferruginous Duck, Willington GP, 17th Oct 03. This 1st winter bird was found at 16.50 among Pochards. The bird was asleep for most of the time, but did show well at times, showing all the features assoicated with this species

Grey Phalarope, Carsington Water, 16th Oct 03. This bird showed pretty well, as per usual with Phalaropes, it didn't seem to batter an eyelid at me as it kept creeping closer. Didn't hang on 1 more day when the sun was out though!

Pectoral Sandpipers, Wyver Lane, 12th Sept 03. These 2 birds were found on this date, too our annoyance, surely theres one in the Trent Valley somewhere?!!

Great White Egret, River Trent, 6th Sept. Photo by Rob Hutchinson. This bird had been around for a while and was seen on the river Trent near Walton and elsewhere

Pectoral Sandpipers, Wyver Lane, 12th Sept 03. Same 2 birds as above. Excellent muddy shoreline surrounds the pool, where are the other waders?! Not even a Green Sandpiper seen, its just not fair sometimes!

Caspian Gull, 2nd cal year, Shardlow, July 03. This bird was present on and off for over a month, allowing a great deal of study of this distinctive, but tricky to identify bird. Ususally seen in roosts, inland, and I doubt whether they can be 100% identified that way, so it was nice to confirm an identity of one. A 3rd cal bird was seen here, which looked good, but can you ever truely discount other larus' at that age?

Yellow-legged Gull, juvenile, Shardlow, July 03. Birds in this plumage aren't reguarly seen in the Trent Valley, but they are possibly the easiest to identify. Note greater coverts and tertial pattern. Structure alone makes this an interesting bird to warrant closer and better views. Only seen on 1 date, strangely

Yellow-legged Gull, Shardlow, June 03. One of several adults present at this site among the LBBG's during the Summer, possibly involving as many 13 birds, including 1 juv, 2 1st sums and a 2nd sum, with a max of 5 adults on 1 date. Note the state of the birds moult compared to Herring Gull at this time of year

Mealy Redpoll - Staunton Harold Reservoir, Jan 03. This bird was one of a small flock found in the same trees I found a flock in last winter, unfortunately unlike last years flock they didnt remain for longer than a day. Not a good photo, but enough to show the streaked undertail coverts and whitish underparts

Snow Bunting, Mam Tor, Feb 99. This 1st winter male was one of 4 birds present at the summit. Fantastic birds, and a nice county bird, I waited around for 4 hours for these to show, they showed for 5 minutes before flying off high north. Luckily it was sunny!

Pectoral Sandpiper, Blithfield Reservoir, Sept 99. Not a Derbyshire bird, but as near as! This mecca of a reservoir has every wader every Autumn it seems! Luckily one of these appeared at Willington the week after. One of my better pictures, a great bird

Rock Pipit, Church Wilne Reservoir, March 98. This bird was seen on the same day as I saw several Rock Pipits, along with a littoralis race bird at Farmoor Res, Oxons, as there was a drake Surf Scoter there. This bird is presumed a nominate race bird

Red-necked Grebe, Foremark Reservoir, Nov 98. This bird was present along with a juv Shag, showing well at times, at the typically birdless Foremark, poor old fat boy, will he ever learn!

Black-throated Diver, Swarkestone GP, Dec 96. I wish this turned up like this now! It fed literally 15 feet from me but all I used then was an adaptor to my 'scope, so I had to wait for it to venture further out to focus on it, a great bird once again

Waxwing, Ilkeston, Jan 01. This was part of a small flock residing in an estate, strangely favouring small shrubs low down when we first arrived. Never can get side on photos of these birds!

Little Stint, Blithfield Res, Oct 03. This bird was first thought to possibly be a Semipalmated Sandpiper, but this soon got dispelled, along with Western and Red-necked Stint. It appears to be in heavy moult to 1st winter plumage
