The coast around Charmouth and Lyme Regis is world famous for paleological study. It's fossils cover a period from the early lower Jurassic 195-180 million years ago embedded in mudstone and limestone, as well as Cretaceous layers about 100 million years old. The rocks of the interim period have worn away due to the movement of the earth. A wide range of fossils can be found including Ammonites, Belemnites, Crinoids, Brachiopods, Bivalves as well as the remains of the Ichthyosaur made famous by Mary Anning in the early 19th century. This stretch of coastline has surely got to be one of the best fossil sites in Britain.
