Belemnites
Some of the above were found whilst walking between the two beaches of Lyme
Regis and Charmouth. We collected dozens of belemnite pieces on our first trip
to the area, such was our enthusiasm ! Most were about an inch or so long and
quite weathered by the wave action but they were easy to find.
Other specimens were taken from the mud slides on Charmouth beach as well as
the beach at Seatown.
Once home, I used some 1200 grit wet and dry paper to sand away the hardened
limestone matrix to reveal the beautiful colours beneath.

The specimen below shows the hard limestone jacket that covers most of the belemnites
found in this area. One day I will get round to cleaning off the matrix and
post the finished specimen here. As I scratched away at the mud surrounding
the belemnite, I found several small ammonites, one of which remains on view
- who knows how many more will be found.
