The sediments that became the rocks of the Ludlow area of south Shropshire were laid down approximately 420 million years ago. At that time the sea that formed them was part of the Southern tropics. This shallow, warm sea teemed with life, the evidence for which can be seen at dozens of locations around the market town of Ludlow and the surrounding area. Two particulary good collecting sites are the exposures of Aymestry limestone at the Bringewood Formation where the majority of the above fossils were collected and also the Vinnals area of Mortimer forest where the well preserved Dalmanites remains were found.
