The Onny Valley
|
|
The Onny River Valley was the first Shropshire fossil site we visited.
There are a number of locations along the Onny trail to collect fossils but
we investigated a couple of beaches at one stretch of the river.
Searching through the pebbles washed downstream from the Stiperstones and Long
Mynd we found our first remains of the trilobite Onnia gracilis with it's distinctive
fringe. There were also slabs of Silurian and Ordovician shales and sandstones
containing the screwlike impressions of tentaculites as well as limestone packed with
the brachiopod Heterorthis.
