Ramsholt in Suffolk offers a wealth of fossils from three different time periods along a short stretch of the river Deben. The London Clay foreshore dates from around 48-55 million years ago in which you can find crabs, shark teeth and ray plates along with fossils which have been washed out of the cliffs from a much younger age. The Coralline Crag ( 3-5 million years old ) and the Red Crag ( 2-3 million years old ) appear in the low cliff face offering a vast amount of bivalves, corals and gastropods. These are best collected washed out on the foreshore.
We will never forget our trip to Ramsholt, as we encountered gale force winds and torrential rain. The people who saw us trekking out over the marsh path from the Ramsholt Arms pub must have thought we were right nutters! ( I just call it "Extreme Fossiling" ).
