I was re-elected unopposed until 1984 when I won
an election for the position of District Secretary representing all ASLE&F
members on both the Southern and London Underground and left the
National Executive to take up office in early December 1984.
During my service on the National Executive I was elected Vice President
in 1981 and President 1982-83 and 1984 of that body.
District Secretaries dealt with regional negotiations, discipline cases
and health and safety issue's and safety of the line.
In 1987, I won an election which was held throughout British Rail, Tyne
Wear Metro and London Underground of a national ballot of all ASLE&F
members for the position of ASLE&F Assistant General Secretary, taking office
18 October 1987.
In 1989 in a national ballot, again of all ASLE&F members, I won an
election on the first ballot to become General Secretary of ASLE&F
taking office 1 Jan 1990.
I retired on my 65th birthday, when I was elected by the family to be
the general errand boy and grandchild minder, a position I still hold
along with my wife Hilda. |
