The Spice Girls, as well as their managers and songwriters, are nothing if not clever, and Spiceworld, the group's second
album, illustrates exactly how sharp they are. Conventional wisdom dictates that Spiceworld should be a weak fascimile of
Spice, which itself featured a handful of great singles surrounded by filler. Conventional wisdom, in this case, is wrong
— Spiceworld is a better record than its predecessor, boasting a more consistent (and catchier) set of songs and an intoxicating
sense of fun. Instead of merely rewriting Spice, Spiceworld consolidates and expands the group's style, adding Latin flourishes
("Spice Up Your Life"), kitschy blues ("The Lady Is a Vamp") and stomping, neo-Motown blue-eyed soul in the vein of Culture
Club ("Stop"). The girls — Mel C. in particular — are actually turning into good vocalists, and each song plays to their strengths,
giving each Spice a chance to shine. Best of all, each song has a strong melody and a strong, solid beat, whether it's a ballad
or a dance number. It's a pure, unadulterated guilty pleasure and some of the best manufactured mainstream dance-pop of the
late '90s. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Spice doesn't need to be original to be entertaining, no do the Spice Girls need to be good singers. It just has to be executed
well, and the innocuous dance-pop of Spice is infectious. None of the Girls have great voices, but they do exude personality
and charisma, which is what drives bouncy dance-pop like "Wannabe," with its ridiculous "zig-a-zig-ahhh" hook, into pure pop
guilty pleasure. What is surprising is how the sultry soul of "Say You'll Be There" is more than just a guilty pleasure, and
how ballads like "2 Become 1" are perfect adult contemporary confections. The rest of the album isn't quite as catchy as those
first three singles, but it is still an irresistible, immaculately crafted pop that gets by on the skills of the producer
and the charisma of the five Spices. Sure, the last half of the album is forgettable, but it sounds good while it's on, which
is the key to a good dance-pop record. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

As the most popular teen pop sensation in Britain since the '60s, Take That ruled the U.K. charts during the first half of
the '90s. In strict commercial terms, the band sold more records than any English act since the Beatles, though the cultural
and musical importance was significantly less substantial. Conceived as a British answer to New Kids on the Block, Take That
initially worked the same territory as their American counterparts, singing watered-down new jack R&B, urban soul, and mainstream
pop. Eventually, the group worked their way toward Hi-NRG dance music, while also pursuing an adult contemporary ballad direction.
Take That's boyish good looks guaranteed them a significant portion of the teenybopper audience, but in a bizarre twist, most
of their videos and promotional photos had a strong homosexual undercurrent — they were marketed to pre-teen girls and a kitschy
gay audience simultaneously. Take That was also able to make inroads in the adult audience in Britain through Gary Barlow's
melodic, sensitive ballads. For nearly five years, the group's popularity was unsurpassed in Britain, as they racked up a
total of seven number one hits. By the middle of the decade, all of the members were entering their mid-twenties and became
disenchanted with each other. Furthermore, the pop music tastes in Britain were shifting toward the classic guitar pop sounds
of Brit-pop bands like Blur and Oasis, who were able to appeal to both the indie rock and teen pop audience. Consequently,
the group called it quits in 1996, as Oasis began to surpass Take That both in terms of sales and cultural impact. Nevertheless,
Take That remained one of the most interesting and popular British teen pop phenomenons not only of the '90s, but of the rock
& roll era.
Gary Barlow (born January 20, 1971) was always the central figure of Take That. As the lead vocalist and songwriter for the
band, he determined ...

Backstreet Boys were, in many ways, a contradictory band. Comprised entirely of white, middle-class Americans, the group sang
a hybrid of new jack balladry, hip-hop, R&B, and dance club pop that originally found its greatest success in Canada and Europe,
with their 1996 debut album charting in the Top Ten in nearly every country on the continent; ironically, success in their
native land did not follow until nearly two years later.
The core of Backstreet Boys is cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell, who both hail from Lexington, KY. The two began
singing while they were children, performing in local church choirs, as well as festivals, where they sang doo wop and new
jack R&B in the style of Boyz II Men. Two of the other remaining members, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean, were natives of Orlando,
FL, who met each other — as well as transplanted New Yorker and fifth Backstreeter Nick Carter — through auditions for local
commercials, theater, and television. At one audition, the three discovered that they shared an affection for classic soul
and could harmonize together. In no time, they were singing as a trio. Shortly after the trio had formed, Richardson moved
to Orlando, where he became a tour guide at Disney World; at night, he concentrated on becoming a professional musician. Eventually,
he met Dorough, Carter, and McLean through a co-worker, and the four decided to form a group, naming themselves after an Orlando
flea market; Littrell was invited to join to make the band into a quintet.

Through a friend, record producer Louis J. Pearlman, the band secured management from Donna and ...

So much has been said and written about the Beatles — and their story is so mythic in its sweep — that it's difficult to summarize
their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the
obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music
than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously
the best at what they did, and the most popular at what they did. Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, the Beatles grabbed
a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the
pack in terms of creativity, but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass
audience. Their supremacy as rock icons remains unchallenged to this day, decades after their breakup in 1970.
Even when couching praise in specific terms, it's hard to convey the scope of the Beatles' achievements in a mere paragraph
or two. They synthesized all that was good about early rock & roll, and changed it into something original and even more exciting.
They established the prototype for the self-contained rock group that wrote and performed their own material. As composers,
their craft and melodic inventiveness were second to none, and key to the evolution of rock from its blues/R&B-based forms
into a style that was far more eclectic, but equally visceral. As singers, both John Lennon and Paul McCartney were among
the best and most expressive vocalists in rock; the group's harmonies were intricate and exhilarating. As performers, they
were (at least until touring had ground them down) exciting and photogenic; when they retreated into the studio, they were
instrumental in pioneering advanced techniques and multi-layered arrangements. They were also the first British rock group
to achieve worldwide prominence, launching a British Invasion that made rock truly an international phenomenon.

More than any other ...
