MARGARET (MAGGIE) DUNLOP (b. 27 October 1849)

(Position 12 vi on the Genealogy Report)

We know no more about Maggie's childhood than we do about the childhood of any of her siblings.  Maggie married 30 year old David Bigger of Portadown, Northern Ireland, on 10 August 1875, at Strone, Argyll.  Maggie's usual residence was given as 7 Roxburgh Street, Greenock, one of George Dunlop Senr's family homes.  David's father was John Bigger, a spirit merchant, presumably of Portadown.  The minister officiating was F. L. Robertson of St Andrews Church, Glasgow.  Robertson had been the minister of the Mid Parish Church, Greenock, for many years, and it would appear that he must also have been a personal friend of the Dunlop family.  David Bigger was a Doctor of Medicine, having gained his Bachelor degree in 1869 from Glasgow University, the same year as George Dunlop was awarded his Certificate of Proficiency in Engineering Science, and his Doctorate, also from Glasgow University, in 1870.  David had been the Medical Officer for the Tartaraghan Dispensary District (in the neighbourhood of Portadown) from about 1870.  Regrettably, he died in a boating accident on the River Bann on 26 June 1877.  There is some oral tradition that Maggie gave birth to one child, but no search of records has been made, and it is known that no child survived infancy.  Maggie did not remarry, and her father safeguarded her interests by leaving her a liferent on one of his houses, Fairy Glen, at Blairmore, Argyll.  Maggie died, aged 75, at Fairy Glen, Blairmore, on 10 March 1925, and was interred in the Kilmun Churchyard.

The photograph is of Fairy Glen, Blairmore (not to be confused with Fairy Glen, Rosemarkie).  Maggie Bigger is in black in the centre.  There are three girls in the photograph, two of them are known to be her nieces.

AGNES DUNLOP (b. 24 October 1851)

(Position 25 on the Genealogy Report)

Agnes Dunlop was married at 7 Roxburgh Street, Greenock, on 15 April 1873, to 27 year old William Court, a surgeon, whose usual residence was 20 Bark Street, Bolton Le Moors, England.  As far is can be made out, William did not graduate, but was a Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow, and a Licentiate of Medicine, Glasgow, from 1869.  It would appear, therefore, that William was studying at Glasgow College at the same time as George Dunlop and David Bigger.  It is thought that William was born on 21 March 1846, in Kirkcowan, Wigtown; that his father was William Court, a master [clothier], and that his mother was Rebecca Kennedy.  The Rev F. L. Robertson of St Andrews Parish, Glasgow, officiated.  Sister Maggie, and brother George, were witnesses.  Agnes and William had six children, all born in Bolton.  The children were: Margaret, born 1874; William R, born 1876; Phyllis, born 23 August 1877; Alexander Cosgrove Court, born 1882; and Dorothy, born 1885.  William died at the then family home of 17 Folds Road, Little Bolton, on 8 June 1897.  It seems likely that Agnes and family moved back to Blairmore and stayed with Maggie Bigger after William's death.  Their son, Alexander Cosgrove, graduated as a doctor from Edinburgh University in 1908, and had a medical practice at Fairy Glen, Blairmore, from about 1910 until about 1914.  A perusal of Medical Directories suggests that he went on to have a distinguished career as a doctor and as a psychiatrist.  Agnes died, aged 68, at Fairy Glen, Blairmore, on 28 May 1920, and is buried in Kilmun Churchyard.
