Alexander was the first of Thomas Dunlop and Jean Whyte's children to be born in Glasgow, the earlier births having taken place in Paisley. Alexander
was born in Frankfield on 22 November 1802, and died at 3 Germiston Street, Glasgow, on 29 August 1869, aged 66. His occupation at the time of his death
was given as dairyman. On 4 April 1828 Alexander, who was then working as a labourer, married Elisabeth (sic) Adam in the Barony parish, Glasgow, and
was thus the third Dunlop boy to marry one of the Adam girls. (There is oral tradition that the Adam sisters were dressmakers in Glasgow, and a study of
Glasgow Post Office Directories suggests that if that is correct, then they may have continued at their trade after marrying.) Elisabeth was the daughter
of John Adam and Elisabeth Buchanan. She was born in Balfron, Stirlingshire, and was christened on 1 September 1799. Elisabeth was, therefore, somewhat older
than Alexander: Alexander would have been twenty-five, and Elisabeth tweny-nine when they were married.
Alexander and Elisabeth are known to have had at least seven children. Little is known of four of the children other than their births, and in two of the four cases,
their deaths. The four children about whom very little is known were:
Elisabeth, born on 22 February 1829, in the Barony parish, Glasgow. It is not known where or when Eisabeth died.
Jane, born 23 May 1830, in the Barony parish. It is not known when or where Jane died. (9 May 2005: Correction: thanks to information provided by
Kathleen I Stringer of New Zealand, we now know that Jane married in Glasgow in 1858, that she and her husband migrated to New Zealand about
a year later, and that Jane died on 4 April 1903, in Oamaru, North Otagao, New Zealand. Kathleen has identified many of Jane's New Zealand desecendants, and
has brought us much news of them--see table of contents.)
Margaret, born on 2 March 1832, in the Barony parish, died, aged 15 years, on 24 January 1848, but it is not known where she died.
Agnes, born on 14 February 1840, in the Barony parish, died, aged 25, on 26 November 1865. It is not known where she died.
The purpose of this section of the website is to expand upon the lives of the other three children, Janet (b. 1833), Thomas (b. 1838) and Mary (b.1842), and to introduce their
children, the grandchildren of Alexander and Elisabeth, and also too, but to a lesser extent, to introduce the great-grandchildren of Alexander and Elisabeth. |
