Jane Dunlop, the second of seven children, was born in the Barony Parish, Glasgow, on 23 May
1830. Her parents were Alexander Dunlop (b. 1802) and Elisabeth Adam. At his
marriage to Elisabeth, in 1828, Alexander was working as a labourer. In 1829 he was a
toll keeper in the Drygate, Glasgow (the Drygate is today a short street in the centre of
Glasgow, close to the cattle market). In 1830, about the time of Jane's birth,
Alexander was a farm servant at Brown Hill (but it is not known where Brown Hill was). In
1838 he was a carter in Port Dundas, Glasgow (that is, he drove a horse and cart, or similar
vehicle, and may have been employed or self-employed). And in later years he was a dairyman,
also in Port Dundas. The family home at that time was 3 Germiston Street, Glasgow.
Nothing is known of Jane's precise place of birth, or of her upbringing. Jane, a spinster,
married Gavin Paterson, a bachelor, on 26 November 1858, at [3] Germiston Street, Glasgow, after
Banns had been called according to the forms of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Gavin
was residing at 540 Dobbies Loan, Port Dundas, and was a carter (it is assumed that he was
employed, and not self-employed). He was born in Glasgow about 1831, and his parents were
George Paterson, a farm servant, and Elisabeth Paterson or Morrison. Jane's place of
residence was given on the marriage certificate as 3 Germiston Street, Barony Parish, Glasgow,
and her father's occupation was given as dairyman. Both Jane and Gavin signed the register,
that is, neither mader their mark.
