We are fortunate, when trying to re-trace the footsteps of Jane Dunlop and Gavin Paterson in order to learn something of their lives in Otago, to have the two obituaries referred to above.  The obituary of Jane Paterson or Dunlop (Oamaru Mail, 4 April 1903) read:
Another of the early settlers of Oamaru passed over to the great majority this morning when Mrs Gavin Paterson died, at the age of 73.  The deceased lady came to the colony with her husband in 1860 and shortly afterwards the couple came to Oamaru, where they ever since continued to reside.  In common with other pioneers Mrs Paterson had a great many experiences of the hardships upon the early settlement of the district and shared in the happy intercourse which made pioneer life agreeable and filled the years with pleasant recollection.

The obituary of Gavin Paterson (Oamaru Mail, 29 March 1917, p. 3) read:
By the death of Mr Gavin Paterson, at the age of 86, the district has lost one of the earliest settlers.  He was married in Glasgow in 1858, and three years later landed at Port Chalmers, coming up to Oamaru under engagement as laborer to work for Mr James Hassell of Cave Valley, Whitestone.  Here he remained six years before leaving for Totara, where he worked several years.  He then came to Oamaru where he has resided ever since.  His wife predeceased him several years.  He leaves to mourn his loss seven sons and three daughters of a family of eleven.

There is also oral tradition stating that Gavin Paterson was a shepherd at Taipo for Teschemaker, and that he was at some time a stonesmason.
