MARY HAY DUNLOP (b. 31 Oct 1844)

(Position 23 on the Genealogy Report)

Mary was born in Glasgow and accompanied her parents to Cowal, but other than that, nothing is known of her childhood.  On 29 April 1870 Mary, then 25 years old, was married to 26 year old James Riddell at Strone.  James's usual residence, as provided by the marriage certificate, was Limerick, and his occupation was given as 'traveller'.  It is known that for many yeas James was the London salesman for Archibald Walker's Limerick whisky distillery, and for Charles and David Gray's Loch Katrine, Glasgow, distillery.  It is assumed, therfore, that James was a traveller for Archibald Walker when he married Margaret.  James was born in Glasgow, and his parents were James Riddell and Janet Langwell.  Nothing is known of James's childhood.

Four births have been located for Mary and James.  They are: James Riddell, born 28 March 1871 at Strone; Agnes Mary, born 10 September 1872, at the Argyll Hotel, Strone; Janet Langwill (sic), born 15 July 1874, at Roslin Cottage, Strone; and George Dunlop, born 16 July 1879, at 20 Bank Street, Greenock.  But from information provided in the 1891 census it is known that there was one more child, Jessie, who was born in Scotland, and who was sixteen years old when the census was taken (5 April 1891).

Mary, James and family, lived in Catford, South London, for some, and perhaps for many years: in 1894 they were at 30 Ringstead Road, Catford, and in 1900 they were at 24 Ringstead Road.  When James died, however, on 26 September 1906, aged 63 years, it was at 'Blairmore', 31 Ceylon Road, Westcliffe, Essex, and it is assumed that that had become the family home.  Calling their home 'Blairmore' would seem to suggest that Mary, James and the children, had fond memories of their years spent in Cowal.  Mary Hay died, aged 80 years, on 8 February 1925, at 15 Lewisham Park, Catford.  Her home address was given as 11 Carholme Road, Forest Hill, which was also the address of the informant to her death, G. D. Riddell, her son.
