Sawyer's Travel Logs <><>- STONEHENGE -<><>

Even though its the tourist thing to do; I've been wanting to check out Stonehenge for quite a while. Just one of those things I hadn't gotten around to yet... Anyway, me and Dave (my roommate) were at Scruffys having a couple jars when Jules mentioned he had been to Stonehenge a few weeks ago. That set my mind in motion. Dave had a new Alfa and had never been there either, neither of us had to work the next day... So why the hell not? Dave agreed.

We were up the next morning, slightly hungover and running a little late, but still we were on the M4 by noon... Maybe an hour and a half later, we came around a bend and down a hill- and there was Stonehenge, in the middle of nowhere bigger than sh*t...

Now I don't know too much about Stonehenge, and I won't pretend to be an expert. I know the history streches as far back as 3050BC and some people believe Stonehenge was built and used by Druids. If you want more info, then check out this website I found that is pretty comprehensive: http://home.earthlink.net/~shadowfax/sfstone.htm.

One thing I want to mention is I was pretty disgusted by the commercialism of it all... After we parked, we walked towards the rocks and realized it was fenced off. There was a tunnel under the road we would have to walk through. So we headed in that direction and had to stand in a queue and pay an entrance fee of 4 quid. We got in and there was a Stonehenge grill, a Stonehenge ice cream stand, a Stonehenge souvineir shop: I think you get the picture. So once we paid to get in, walked through the tunnel, and got to where Stonehenge actually was- We realized we were confined to a foot path. I was hoping I would get to stand in the middle of the circle and even touch one of the rocks or whatever, but it wasn't to be. I guess its because of vandalism in the past, but the whole thing still reminded me of a Simpsons episode.

Stonehenge itself though (the actual rocks/structure) was pretty awesome, and well worth the drive... Click on the thumbnails pics below to see the full 640 X 480 versions (taken on 29th of July 1999).
