Smallpipes with parallel drone
Cantiga de Santa Maria

Sarabande with Variations from an unpublished French manuscript Ca 1650 for the Baroque Smallpipes. See Instruments page for details

SARABANDE [6a] Nº. 7 [d] This version was written both in Em/G, and in G. The last repeat is original. This piece and the following are the only ones going beyond the top e, suggesting that the lower line might have been written for instruments with a lower range, rather than as a harmony. See Nº 21 [a] below for an alternative complete version.

[Sarabande 6b] Nº. 21 [a] See 7[d] above for an alternative simpler version. Shut off drones or transpose to Gm.

[Sarabande? 7] Nº. 12 [e] The repeats are original.

BRANLE DE LA CIE [?] Nº. 5 [c] Title partly obscured. This is an approximation. The writing suggests a fast pace. In the original, the two final bars (here repeat 1 and 2) were part of the same strain and the repeat sign was placed at the very end.

ST NICOLAS [Branle] Nº 1 [b] Several repeat formats are possible: A1 A1 B1 B1, A1 A2 B1 B2 as in the original, or A2 A2 B2 B2. An accompaniment appears in a guitar manuscript dated 1649 under the title 'Branle de St Nicolas'.
