We are very happy to share, completely free of charge, the fruits of our many years' genealogical labours with bona fide Family History researchers for their own private use, but not for use by professional genealogists for commercial purposes or financial gain! In exchange, we welcome information from all authentic sources as well as copies of Family Trees — Tony & John W.

ADVICE
Herefordshire

Tony and I have put-together this page in response to hundreds of e-mailed questions and requests, many of which contain the sentence
" I would like to trace my Family History back ...."
At the outset we should say that, unless you're very, very lucky and find someone (like us!) who has already done most of the very time-consuming research and/or obtained (at considerable cost) as many of the relevant Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates as possible, there is no really cheap and easy short-cut to tracing your ancestors ! But see below for some good news!

If you live in the UK, then things are easier but, for example, to obtain Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates (essential to documented research), this still means, as the least expensive option, a series of visits to The Public Records Office (Family History) often involving what's known as "10-year period" searches of the Index Books. These records are pretty complete and comprehensive, even for Wales, from 1835/37 onwards to the present day. Prior to about 1835, you have to turn to Local Parish Registers and other records.

Clwyd

At the PRO, once you have found what you hope is the reference you need, you then have to request and pay-in advance (non-returnable) for the certificate and then go home and wait, and pray, that it's the certificate for the correct John W or whoever, in that Parish at that time!

That said, we DO have over 2000 names in our database and over 15 Branches and Trees based on hundreds of certificates etc., at a total cost over 30 years, in excess of £3500 ! We will happily search our database for bona fide enquirers and if successful will supply a copy of the Tree or Branch, totally free (for personal use only, and NOT for sale or commercial gain) , and preferably in exchange for other information which we can share.

There are other methods, all more expensive, of obtaining certificates including postal applications and using a professional researcher to do the searching for you — you will find full details on the PRO web-site www.pro.gov.uk

Sadly, over the years, we have been contacted by a number of time-wasters and unscrupulous individuals who have tried to obtain information from our database, so be warned ! We have built-up a List of these people, so if you're in any doubt at all about anyone offering you information please don't hesitate to check with us first.

We may already have the information available FREE, preferably in exchange for being able to share your Family Tree with other bona fide researchers. We gratefully acknowledge the help of many, many co-researchers who have provided information to complement our data.

More information, advice and an example

To give you an idea of what's involved, let's take an example where someone is trying to trace his or her ancestors further back than his/her great-grandfather, who was born 1865 -1870, in or near Manchester, and who married between 1890 and 1900.

The first step is to obtain the birth and marriage certificates for the great-grandfather. Then, once you've got these, the his birth certificate will give details of his parents, and his birthdate will give a good clue to their marriage date. If both these dates are after 1837, then you're in luck — getting these certificates will get you as far back as you're going to get with PRO certificates and give you lots of information — look carefully at all the witnesses recorded on Marriage Certificates; they'll give you lots of information and big clues, often details of siblings or cousins.

Armed with this information, you can search local Parish Records which is probably most easily done through a Local Family History Society for the county involved e.g. Powys, Lancashire etc. It's always best to stick with documentary evidence of this kind and, however tempting, to avoid listening to guesswork, theories and heresay.

Also, take care to avoid fraudsters and from being ripped-off ! We have been contacted by quite a few people who have been charged considerable sums for information that has been acquired FREE from this website or our Trees and Branches provided FREE, or for information which is pure fantasy!

If you read the Domesday Book, you will realise that there's a 9:1 chance that you're descended from a serf, villian or labourer rather than from a Norman Duke, and so the "Coats of Arms" scams are just that, a scam.

All that said, we will help you all we can, provided you have already done all you can to obtain as much documentary evidence as possible from the sources we have indicated. Quite often Family Bibles and other personal documents do provide "inside information" not available in the public domain and we are very privileged to have had access to many, many such documents and often have their owners' permission to share the information.

We have incorporated this information in our many Branches and Trees which are available by email, fax or snail-mail, on request by contacting us — many Trees used to be available for download directly from this website but this free service was abused by some unscrupulous individuals and so it is now only available by personal application to us via our Webmaster and on the provision of details of the your identity, the bona fide nature of your personal enquiry and preferably your family lineage in exchange.

We also have extensive databases of public domain information of Ws currently living in the UK and it's often worth phoning or writing to any potential previously unknown relatives. Again we are happy to provide this information totally FREE OF CHARGE, subject to the conditions explained above.

We can also provide details of our Black List of fraudsters and con-merchants operating in our and other genealogical lineages — don't part with your money until you've checked with us first; it could save you £100s or $100s !

If you specifically request, we will also happily post your enquiry on our own FORUM and you might be well-advised to also post your message on one of the other external forums to which we have included links on our FORUM page.

Yours sincerely and Good Luck in your researches !

John & Tony W

and P.S., please don't attach too much significance to the spelling of the surname ... almost anything goes (see SPELLING) and only recently one of our researchers came-across a John Wozencraft whose name was recorded as Wolsoncroft when he got married.
