WORTHING'S PROMINENT PEOPLE

JOHN SELDEN (1584-1654)

Author, Lawyer, and Statesman. Born at High Salvington, Worthing. Baptised at West Tarring Church. His thatched cottage was donated to the local council in 1941 but burnt down in the 1950's. A plaque, on the gatepost of the bungalow that replaced it, used to mark the site at 17, Selden's Way,Worthing, but has now been removed for some reason.

DID YOU KNOW...

SHELLEY (1792-1822)

On the wall of offices belonging to Bennett, Griffin and Partners, at 23, Warwick Street, Worthing, there is a blue plaque marking the site where two of Shelley's earliest works were printed. A book of poems and a pamphlet called The Necessity of Atheism were printed at Phillips press at what was then 12, Warwick Street.

OSCAR WILDE (1854-1900)

Stayed at The Haven Hotel 5, Esplanade, Worthing, between August and October 1894. A block of flats and a garage now stand on the site, just east of the Aquarena swimming pools. He wrote THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST there and named the central character after the town.

ALMA COGAN (1932-1966) As a young girl Alma Cogan lived with her parents above their shop in Warwick Street, then moved to a large house on the corner of Lansdowne Road and Downview Road.
