"Scruffy Child"
You know, you were a scruffy child,
dirty knees hair all wild
no matter what I dressed you in
you looked like you just got out of a bin
every day you`d be put in the shower,
but you never stayed clean for more than an hour,
climbing trees, wading in the bog
rolling in the grass with the family dog
I`d watch you often as you played in the yard
rough and ready, tough and hard,
bouncing around like a rubber ball
always in a hurry, never slowing down at all
I`d shake my head as you rushed through the door
dragging dirt all over my nice clean floor,
a grin on your face, ignoring my shout
you`d grab a drink and run back out.
but should your sisters ever cry
you were there in a trice asking them why
you never could bear to see them in pain
and would do anything to make them alright again,
many times you would bring back to the house
an injured bird or a half dead mouse
nursing them carefully to keep them alive
breaking your heart if they didn`t survive.
you`re a man now, so tall I have to look up at you
smart, self assured, clean and tidy too!!
your handsome and witty, you turned out just fine
people love you so much and I`m proud that you`re mine,
no matter where you travel on lifes bumpy highway
I would like you to know that at the end of the day
whoever you become as the years unfold
you are still my scruffy child with a heart of gold.
