6541 mystery board. Mystery chip

The missing chip. I now suspect that this is a Western Digital WDxxxx floppy disk controller or equivalent, though I don't know exactly which one.

6541 mystery board. Ident.

This is the only identifying mark on the board. There's not even any helpfull messages in the EPROM to give any further clue.

It's possible that this is a "Sigma Designs Controller" floppy disk interface. I've found some reference to boards with the SDC prefix that are disk controllers but nothing exactly like this.

6541 mystery board. EPROM and PAL16L8

These are the only two chips that have labels. The only extra information that these have is that the EPROM is possibly dated 14th February 1986 and, if so, was probably made by an American company.
