From the very outset ladies have been part of Renfrew G. C. as the Paisley Gazette of 21 Oct. 1895 reported."On Saturday a series of Mixed Forsomes, played by Lady & Gent versus Lady & Gent. The highest score was made by Miss Shearer and Mr French of 56." Again the Paisley Gazette of 28 Oct. 1895 reports.
Tea was served in the pavilion. Mrs Tom Whyte and Miss Wood presided." Within 30 years of the Club's foundation, female membership rose to over 200, although in recent years ladies' membership has hovered around the 100 mark.
The period between 1964 and 1976 was the era of the very popular Betty Leigh whose husband, Douglas, annually presents the Betty Leigh Trophy donated to the club in her memory.
Nancy Cowan and Joyce Antzoulatos have dominated the Club's ladies championships in recent times, with 14 victories for Nancy and 6 for Joyce. Both Nancy Cowan and Betty Leigh were Captains of the Ladies Section. |
