PeerGuardian Frequently Asked Questions

1. Did you know that the IP ranges are larger than they should be?
I admit there was a massive screw-up on the first release, it blocked more addresses than it should (one of the entries in the IP banlist was slightly wrong). This has been fixed in v1.1 as well as in the profile updates.

2. How do I fix the error regarding 'mscomctl.ocx'?
The best thing to do is either manually place the mscomctl.ocx file in your system folder or install PeerGuardian using the latest installer. If you still have problems, contact meth@methmail.cjb.net.

3. How does this work, I didn't think VB could handle kernal functions?
Using the API and memory copy functions you can read/write to Kernal-level data tables, this includes the TCP table. - Don't always believe what C++ coders tell you about VB. =)

4. Who are MediaForce, Ranger, BayTSP, MediaDefender, etc.?
These are companies that either scan p2p networks and send out cease and desist letters to people they find sharing copyrighted material or companies that intentionally pollute these networks, stealing bandwidth off thousands of people. They are essentially bastards who are ripping the RIAA/MPAA and affiliated artists off by fooling them into thinking they're going to be able to have a discernable effect against P2P.

5. Who are C2-Media, Gain, Xupiter, etc.?
These are spyware companies, some of which are scumware or stealware, these will track your internet activity, relay information you enter in website forms to their databases, hijack your webbrowser and in some cases will even trap a referral link from a site and change the referral so that they make the money rather than person who's site you were really referred from. According to a lot of anti-spyware companies Gator.com/GAIN has been caught red-handed stealing from webmasters. I will probably be looking into ways of exploiting the CMESYS/GMT software at a later date so that it can be used against it's creators.

6. How do I add the profile updates?
Just drag the profile update file (should end with ".P2P") onto the banlist (in the PeerGuardian console). The new IP ranges will be added instantly to your banlist.
