| We finally dragged ourselves away from
Happy Camping and set off for Brindisi and a ferry to Greece. As usual, we did not manage
to get up and away particularly early (we're going to have to get better at this before we
get to places where it's so hot that travelling must be done in the morning!). The road from Rome to Brindisi is a long one, especially if you're driving at 50 mph and with stops for fuel and lunch it was clear we were not going to make it by nightfall. A look at the map and the Lonely Planet guide revealed a number of campsites at a resort about 100km from Brindisi called Metaponte so we headed there. It soon became apparent that we had just missed the end of the season as all the campsites around were closed. The tumble weed rolling across the road emphasised this fact and we thought we would probably have to camp in a car park somewhere. We stopped to ask if there was anywhere to camp at the only shop that was open for miles around and following a great deal of hand waving, pointing and me repeatedly saying "camping?" we ascertained we were to follow a young man in his car to an 'agri-tourism' (?). |
