Day 5 - 6th September 1999

I'd forgotten what squat toilets were like. Once reminded ... we made an early start for the Swiss border on our way to Geneva. We were amazed at far you can actually get in a day if you can bother to drag yourself out of your bed before 10 am. On the road, the scenery became more and more impressive as we started into the Alps. We could see mountain passes ahead of us and I'm sure the Land Rover was thinking to itself "hang on ... it was never like this in Croydon when I used to be owned by the Water Board". Fourth gear became a thing of the past ... and some inclines even had us struggling in second. These were very extreme hills mind you!

In the afternoon we were in Geneva and trying to find our friends' house by the edge of Lake Geneva. Getting to Andre Charles and Eileen's house involves driving under a railway bridge that has a maximum height limit of 2.7 metres. We didn't know exactly how high we were ... so we drove in cautiously with Liz out on the road checking the clearance. As I inched forward ... our roof got closer and closer to to the bridge until we were almost wedged in. I guess we now know that we are 2.7 metres high!  We got to AC and Eileen's just in time to drink all their wine and stuff ourselves on Eileen's amazing dinner. We were beginning to enjoy this travelling thing now.
