Breeding

There are 2 different ways in which you could operate breeding geckos, either a harem setup or a seperate setup. For the Harem setup you need at least a 20" vivarium in order to keep 2 and upwards geckos. You keep them in the same vivarium all the time unless they fight in which you must remove the/one injured gecko from the vivarium. 2 males always fight, therefore NEVER keep 2 males together. 1 male and 2 females is okay even 3 or more, as long as each gecko has AT LEAST 1 hide, preferably 2 hides to use.

For the other setup, the separate setup, you just keep your 2 geckos like you normally do and when you wish to breed them take one or the other into the others cage to allow them to mate. Once they have mated remove the one you moved into the others cage back into their own

If you used the Harem setup, they will mate at will. With the seperate setup. they will mate as soon as you put them in together. The male gets excited, and then chases after the female while flicking its tongue to smell the females scent, with its tail twitching. The male may bite the female on the neck to hold the female still while the gecko gets into position. The male then wraps his tail under the females until their vents meet, and wraps its hind legs around the females pelvis. He then inserts one hemipenis into the oviduct. Sperm is transferred and then the geckos seperate.

The female grows lumpier afterwards, and you can see the outlines of the eggs underneath the body. She then starts to get restless as she looks for a place to lay her eggs.

When this happens place a tub in the vivarium, a good tub is a Margerine tub. Fill it with damp sphagnum moss. Bury it level with the substrate. This is what the female is looking for so check every day for the eggs. They will mostly lay 1 or 2 eggs, mostly 2, and very very rarely 3. Now remove these eggs for incubation. To learn about incubation check the incubation section to the right.
