INTRODUCTION

We’re
sure that many of you will have read some of leading lure-angler Big John
Worzencraft's many other articles elsewhere on the 'Net, his excellent chapters
in Charlie Bettell's book "The Art of Lure-fishing", and his reviews
and articles in monthly angling magazines etc.
Now, I happen to know for a fact that for a long time John has been bemoaning the demise of Rapala's small, jointed sinking (CountDown) minnows and has been searching for alternatives.
After a tip-off from his friend Janos, in Hungary, John finally located KOVMASTERS, lure-manufacturers of near-perfection, and, lo-and-behold, among their very extensive range of plugs, John discovered their Kovmaster PTL Spider Double, a range of jointed sinking minnows in a huge range of colours ! Eureka!
John very kindly sent us a couple of these beautifully made lures and we can't wait to try them out. In the meantime, we have asked John, with the help of Štefan Kovác, the man behind Kovmasters, to review the whole range of these fascinating lures. Here's what he has to say:-
Kovmasters,
masters of lure-making
Štefan
Kovác has
been making lures for sometime now but is relatively unknown outside his home
country. When he assured me that his lures were made to perfection, to equal
or better anything-else on the market, I ordered some immediately and eagerly
awaited them, to see if Štefan was
exaggerating ... most definitely he was not !
I should say, at the outset, that with Kovmasters Wobblers, we are talking about medium to small, and even tiny, plugs, the largest being around 16 cm and the smallest only 3 cm.
Jointed
Countdown Minnows first
Editor Nick has already explained that my initial interest was in Kovmasters'
PTL Spider Double plugs, jointed sinking plugs — by the way, Kovmasters
lures are called Wobblers
— in the hope that these are replacements for the
now long-defunct Rapala CDJ range.
So, having samples of these lovely little Wobblers in my hot sweaty hand, it makes-sense for me to describe them first. Let's take the smallest in this range, the 7cm PTL Spider Double wobbler: in fact it's only 6.5 cm long, which for me, is a bonus. It weighs 5.7 gm, so it's a nice replacement for the much-missed (by me anyway) Rapala CDJ-7.

Here's a Table of the whole range of PTL Spider Double Wobbler jointed sinking minnows:-

also have a lovely range of plugs for them too, viz.
