![]() this is some information from magazines and books i gathered together. some of them are maybe wrong. i dunno. but most of them are probably true. i think noel thomas gallagher was born on 29 may 1967, in a small council house at 2 sandycroft street in the longsite are of manchester. the house had four rooms. there were two bedrooms upstairs, steep stairs took you down to a small sitting room and kitchen, and outside were the toilet and a coal cellar. noel had a big brother named paul anthony gallagher. paul was 14 months older than noel. three days later after noel was born, the beatles' revolutionary album sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band was released. when noel was a child, he used to get along with his brother, paul. they went everywhere together up until they were teenagers. at that time, noel and paul were currently attending st. robert's primary school but when the family had received a letter from their landlords, the local council, informing them that their house had been marked for demolition. so, they have to moved across town in t he area of burnage. their new house was located at 14 ashbourne avenue, situated in a cul de sac. noel and paul were placed in a catholic primary school called st. benard's. noel was bright but often lazy in school. it was only when something interested him that he would apply himself. his fancy was mainly about football. his favorite football team is manchester city, his father choices of clubs. every summer, the gallaghers would travel back to peggy's birthplace in county mayo to stay with their granny, aunts, uncles and cousins. they used to picking blackberries to make jam, go over to the well to get water or go fishing with their uncle. but there was far more fun to be had when all family gathered together at night. a radio would be on in the corner, playing irish music and then they all started to sing. that's when noel was first introduced to live music, in the form of traditional irish music. growing up, noel heard and was struck by certain irish songs. it was peggy who bought noel his first record player, and peggy also bought noel and paul their first guitars. noel and paul were attracted to music, and peggy would do her utmost to encourage. it was her way of making up for their father's seeming lack of interest in his children, as well as expressing the sheer of joy and pride she felt for 'em. on 21 september 1972, william john paul gallagher or better known as liam 'our kid' gallagher was born. their father was working as a county & western DJ at holy name social club in chorlton. he earned £10 a night but all the money he got is all for drinking at the local bar. it was around that time he started drinking very heavily. noel suffered most from his father's temper with regular beatings. neither paul nor liam suffered to the same extent as noel who even at that young age had a sarcastic streak running through him. peggy also suffered at the hand of thomas. noel was incredibly protective of his mother and hated his father for the emotional and physical pain he put his mother though. at the age of 14, noel was a withdrawn moody child who suffered from dyslexia and for 4 years with stutter, which he had specialist treatment. in september 1978, noel entered st. mark's secondary school, and he ran straight into a nightmare. first of all, a lot of his friends had gone to st. benard's school. then, he discovered that the school now adopted a boys-only policy. noel had failed his 11 plus exams but the result became mixed up with a student called david gallagher. he was somehow placed in the wrong class, he got put in the top class for his first year. that's where noel got all his hate of school from. noel had taken guitar lessons in the last year of primary school but his teacher had tried to noel to play left-handed because he's left-handed, but noel could only play with right-handed. so, he took guitar lessons in st. mark's due to a lack of an understanding teacher. his first acoustic 'real' guitar came from his dad. thomas had brought a guitar but he couldn't play it so it ends up just laying around the house, and noel picked it up and began playing. faced with an unhappy home life and filled with contempt for his school and classmates, noel gallagher started to isolate himself. he recalls his first two years at school as 'days filled with just starting out of the window'. at home, he found himself writing poems, scraps of lyrics. and out in the street he fully involved himself in illegal activities. he had been caught up with crime twice, and he'd been doing glue-sniffing (some kind of drugs but it's legal and cheap). noel reckons he was about 12 years old when he first involved with it. noel spent his days at his friend's houses, playing records, sniffing-glue. at home, he practised the guitar and at the age 13, he attended his first gig, "the damned at the manchester apollo", though at this time manchester city and football were still his chief pastime. although at this point music still hadn't consumed his life. football held more importance. a regular now at maine road, manchester city had performed well in the early 1970s. there was another strain of football in Noel's life, but it's only connection with manchester city was that it was played on huff end playing fields where the away-fans' coaches park. gaelic football is a mix of football and rugby. thomas gallagher played and he would take noel and paul along and they too would end up in a game. eventually, noel joined the oisian's gaelic football club and won many trophies with his team. this is where noel would have gained his strength from, developing a strong constitution that would be constantly tested by drink and drugs in the coming years. but what always caught noel's and some of the other boys’ attention was when they played in manchester, there was a house that they could see from the field and it always had this 1960s zephyr car parked outside which the boys became fascinated by. another pace to head for was erwood park, a huge park that divides burnage from levenshulme. by that time though, noel was taking more of an interest in the guitar. he could play the bass line from songs such as 'anarchy in the uk' by sex pistols, only on one string. And that's impressed him so much that rock star aspirations started to form on his mind. eventually, noel learnt a song 'house of the rising sun' by the animals and mainly of noel's later compositions would follow its style by incorporating a descending chord structure as an intro. quiet often, noel and his friends would play football matches against the boys from levenshulme in erwood park. before or after these games, noel would always spot a group of older guys in the distance, rolling around the grass in fits of laughter. noel figured that they were on glue-sniff too. after all, that was the effect he and his friends got from the substance [laugh]. but somehow their behaviour seemed different. they boys were smell and their hair were long. there's one guy that interested noel. his name was flo and he always brought an acoustic guitar to the park and played songs like 'house of the rising sun' by the animals and 'while my guitar gently weeps' by the beatles. it was while playing football in the local parks that noel met a very talented player from levenshulme called paul 'guigsy' mcguigan, later to became the quiet bass player in oasis. noel also met tony mccarroll whole playing football. for the last few years, the gallagher boys had some argument with their mother to leave Thomas gallagher. peggy wanted to leave of course but one thing held her in is her catholic religion. for peggy to divorce or leave her husband would mean excommunication from the church and that would lead her into hell. but the boys would argue, so she went to council and she begged them to move her and her sons. finally, the council said yes. so, one night when thomas was not home, peggy and her sons moved to a new council house in burnage. noel had been expelled from school the same year liam started, and noel spent his time working on building sites, taking drugs, alcohol and starting many fights. but when noel started getting more into music. the music noel refers to centred mainly around the smiths. another major influence on noel was U2. noel also loved going to gigs in boardwalk or the hacienda. he loved bands like the smiths, the happy mondays, the la's, the stone roses and the inspiral carpets. on 29 may 1998 noel met the inspiral carpets' guitarist, named graham lambert, and they becoming friends. noel was getting very serious about his song writing. noel kept on writing lyrics, putting together chords and spent a lot of his time going to see local groups, such as the tappy mondays or the stone roses but he also present at most manchester city games. one day he heard that the inspiral had just sacked their lead singer. noel thinks this is his chance. with graham helped noel came to the studio. he was very nervous but he'd try not to betrayed anything of what was inside of him. T hen he stood in front of microphone and sing the inspirals' song "butterfly" and "gimme shelter" by the rolling stones. but unfortunately he didn't get the job because his voice wasn't strong enough. on april 1989, noel broke his foot. he was at work when a heavy pipe crashed down on him. he was taken to the hospital and put in plaster and he has to stay at home until he was fine. noel was bored, then one day he phoned graham, to tell him that he wants to roadie for him. so in may 1989 noel travelled with the inspiral carpets to their gig at the duchess of york pub in leeds. soon after, Noel had learnt how to play 3 instruments: guitars, drums and keyboards. there was a sound monitor man working for the band, his name is mark coyle. noel spent a lot of his time playing music with coyle, noel on guitar and coyle on drums. later on coyle is one of noel's closest male friend, and a women that close to noel at that point is louise jones. they lived together in a flat. louise was manager at the local benetton clothes shop. noel had see her a lot in club in hacienda and they got along very well. manchester had now became a 'madchester'. the town went crazy, and there's a new drug that very powerful called ecstasy. noel was a user of ecstasy. manchester was filled in with young drug dealers, mainly in moss side area. they selling ecstasy for enormous profits. later on, they would flood manchester with heroin and cocaine. noel once got arrested in leeds for dealing with ecstasy and cocaine, fortunately he didn't go to jail, noel was given fine and returned home. but he keep going to hacienda and dealing with ecstasy. roading with the inspirals make noel loved travelling. even though the band wasn't pretty good. they're touring to many different countries such as u.s., japan and south america. while he was in america, noel found out from peggy that liam was singing in a band called the rain with Tony McCarroll on drums, Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan on bass and paul 'bonehead' arthurs on guitar. they were playing gig at the boardwalk on 18 august 1991. a month later noel joined the band on the condition that he's the one that write all the songs and take control the group. then, the name was changed by liam to oasis, after a swindon oasis leisure centre where the inspirals had played gig. they worked really hard, practising almost every night in the red house and then they moved to boardwalk in manchester. they were given a room downstairs, it was a small room but they re-painted again to liven up the room. later on, noel had written many songs and they started gig at the boardwalk on 15 january 1992, that's Noel's first concert ever in his life (oasis' second). it wasn't good, they only stood there like stone. noel still working with the inspirals carpets at that time, so he couldn't spend a lot of time with oasis. oasis got their manager from noel. noel's friend ian, asked noel for demo tape to give to his brother. ian's brother was the legendary smiths guitarist johnny marr. he then gave the tape to his manager who was marcus russell. after seeing one gig he took over the management of the band. noel wrote all the songs with almost no help from the rest of the group. 'columbia' was written while working on the building site but liam claims to have written the chorus. 'married with children' was written after a row with girlfriend louise about noel getting up during the night to write songs. 'slide away' was also written about louise who was soon to part company with noel. 'supersonic' noel wrote as a b-side to bring it on down in 8 hours. A couple of days later he had written 'All Around The world'. this was all the way back in 1992. the constant gigging in england led to being signed up by creation records boss alan mcgee. for noel the process of recording the debut album, definitely maybe was tough due to bad production but it was his ambition to simply be in a studio and record a rock 'n' roll record. after noel's relationship with louise jones, he went out with mtv vj named rebecca de ruvo. she shared a flat with a girl called meg. in november 1994, noel had his first meeting with meg matthews, the cousin of english football star, matthew le tissier. she was the running a dj agency called flavor. nothing happened for a while as noel was still dating rebecca. this relationship fizzled out and by the end of 1994 noel and meg were a couple. noel was then living in a flat near primrose hill but very quickly moved into meg's apartment. on 29 december 1994, at a gig in brighton meg hadn't got a clean set of clothes and in their hotel room she was ironing her shirt. noel came in and asked why she was ironing a dirty shirt. during the gig dedicated a song to "the girl in the dirty shirt, she knows who she is." another spark of inspiration for noel's song writing. wonderwall is the most famous of all oasis' song and again it’s written about meg. john lennon's word play is famous and he often used the word wonderwall instead of the word wonderful. so when noel calls meg his wonderwall he really means she's his wonderful. on 7 june 1997, noel thomas gallagher married meg matthews in las vegas' little church of the west. pastor j.c. chevalme ran the ceremony. the music which was picked for the ceremony was: the wedding march, this boy, yesterday, 'till there was you, all my loving and an elvis impersonator also provided some vocal entertainment. noel gallagher is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest songwriters in modern times and his catalogue of about 60 published songs proves just how prolific and talented a writer he is. what direction noel will go in is a debatable issue. he has worked with people ranging from paul weller, paul mccartney, the chemical brothers, burt bacharach, travis and goldie. capital city in the sun |
