A thoroughly Welsh Papageno pays a flying visit
On January 31 the curtain will rise on a new Anglo-American production of Mozart's Magic Flute. The star of this new production by Columbia Artists, USA is young Welsh singer Mark Evans - one of the up and coming singers from the Welsh stable, rapidly following in Bryn Terfel and Rebecca Evans' footsteps. But Mark Evans of Carmarthen, South Wales is following in very particular footsteps, that of the world renown Welsh Baritone, Sir Geraint Evans. It was Sir Geraint who set Mark at the age of 16 on the path to a career in Opera after picking out his voice from a chorus of young singers. The two became firm friends and up until his death, Mark studied with him........ .......It is however, in terms of appearance, character and passion for performance and for engaging the audience that comparisons are drawn, and as a result of these shared traits, their interpretation of roles - no better example perhaps than that of Papageno - a role which Sir Geraint made his own very early on. Mark shows signs of going the same with his own particularly Welsh interpretation of Mozart's naive bird catcher. Sir Geraint Evans first made his mark on American audiences in the late 50's early 60's following his debut at San Francisco Opera. Forty years later, Mark is looking forward to singing in the States. "I'm very much looking forward to the tour and to bringing a very Welsh bird catcher to American audiences. It's a very poignant role for me, as I remember at a very early stage of my singing career studying the role with Sir Geraint - he always said it would be a role I'd make my own"....
