Marlboro Eagles Football Club
Saturday 14th September 2002
Hailey Park

Three straight wins to start the season!

The first Saturday of the season proper! The lads and fans were all looking forward to a fast open mornings football on lush green pitches perfect for the Eagles passing game! One look at the pitch put a stop to that! The grass was long, the pitch bumpy, the goal mouths a good six inches lower than the rest of the field and to top it off there were no pitch markings whatsoever! Even cones were in short supply so bags and piles of grass were called into service to act as a side-line! The advice from the side was "Just kick it.....hard!!"

Squad for today
Niall, Aaron, James, Michael, Ross, Jonathan, Declan, Owen, Hassan.

Go Tim!

Game 1 was against Rumney, a team the lads had not faced before. The first half was played at a furious pace and the lads managed to take a two goal lead before the Rumney lads pulled one back just before half time.  The second half however was dominated by the Eagles and the three extra goals were no surprise.
Game 2 against Pentyrch followed a similar pattern with a very competitive first half in which the lads scored just once followed by a dominant second half performance in which six more goals were scored! A fine performance from the ref should be noted too! Tim boldly went where few fear to tread and took charge of his first Eagle match! Not for him were namby pamby boots to protect his feet! No, real men wear open toed slip ons to referee! I did think however, that he shouldn't have given that last 5 metre scrum!
All was set up for game 3 against local rivals Whitchurch who had also won well against Rumney and Pentyrch. Previous games had ended with honours even and all knew there was a well matched battle about to take place. So it proved, a furious first half saw the sides locked at 0-0 and we moved into the last quarter before the deadlock was broken. A well exercised passing move saw James receive the ball on the left hand side of the area and a fine shot beat the keeper to give the lads a deserved lead. The final minutes continued to be well contested  but with some fine saves by Jonathan, who had not had too much to do in the first two games, the lads held on to take the spoils!

What a way to start the season! Well done lads!
