A clear sky greeted the lads for their first ever match at Splott Park against old rivals Splott Albion. A crisis in numbers again faced the management team with illness, holidays and one "not coming" reducing the squad to 12.
The game started at a furious pace with the ball going end to end as well as side to side. The deadlock didn't last long however as after five minutes Hassan's 25 yard free kick found the net and the Eagles took and early advantage. This was very short lived however and Splott came back into the match straight away with an equaliser! This pattern was to repeat itself on two more occasions as the match unfolded.
Jonathan put Niall's cross away to put the score at 2-1 but again Splott replied immediately and even when Aaron made it 3-2 the Splott lads refused to lie down and once again they pulled back within minutes! At half time the score was 3-3 and it was "game on" for the second half!
Splott continued to look dangerous and the back line of Marley, Hassan, Declan and Rhys needed to be on their toes to repel the dangerous Splott attacks. Will needed to be at his most alert to catch several shots before the Marlboro Midfield of James, Niall and Joey started to exert control with some telling through balls to Aaron and Jon. Twenty minutes of frantic second half football took place before another goal broke the deadlock. Aaron looked to have put the Eagles ahead but his shot hit the post and the lads didn't make the rebound count. Soon after Aaron put and excellent through ball for Niall to take full advantage of and the Eagles edged ahead at 4-3. What was now needed was for the Eagles to get another to take the heart out of the Splott resistance! Two minutes later and Niall did it again with the fifth goal! However, Splott failed to let their heads drop and pulled one back after a free kick into the box wasn't cleared and the ball bounced around the area until it found the back of the Eagles net! What followed was ten final minutes of sometimes heart stopping goal mouth moments but the lads held out to win 5-4. Congratulations to both sets of lads and well done to the ref who performed excellently!
