| Biography
It all started when guitar wizard Richard Warburton (nickname:
"Warb") and infamous local singer-songwriter Stephen Regnauld (nickname:
"Reg") met via sax player Jake Broadhurst and fanzine writer Mark Turner
(who later became the band’s manager). Stephen
began writing songs over 4 years ago and started to build up a following around
the UK by playing solo acoustic gigs. Following these well received live appearances,
along with radio sessions on Radio Ceredigion (Wales) and Radio Stoke, he went
into the studio to produce his classic self-released debut E.P, "View From
a Window". Following several rave reviews in JugMamma and The Exclusive fanzine,
Stephen decided that his sound could be built upon through the addition of a full
band line-up. By
pure chance, Richard's band "Stonefish" had gone about their seperate
ways and he was drowning his sorrows at The Stage's (previous name for great local
venue, The Sugarmill) indie night circa September 1999. He met Stephen and they
began to discuss music, the result being that Reg asked him to play on his second
demo. They began recording at Platinum Studios but then lost contact
due to other commitments until July 2000 when Reg played at local music festival
Jakestock 2000. Warb watched Travis on glastonbury 2000 and thought to himself
“Well if They can do it, so can I". Straight away he thought of Reg and the
two decided to form a band - "Marshal". Drummer
Chris was recruited from the ashes of guitar band, "The Image", and brother
Andy joined on bass when Stephen found him in his neighbouring bedroom. He
learnt the bass from scratch and in just 9 months has developed into a great
bass player. Marshal
then set about their quest of musical supremacy and started to rehearse and gig
extensively. Their first ever gig was at the place that the band were formed,
The Sugarmill, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent in October 2000. Whilst
rehearsing, they began to play the song 'It's You' which was written by "Stonefish"
and which Jake Broadhurst co-wrote. He was duly brought in to play sax and is
now playing on several tracks. The band thought that their sound needed that
little something extra and immediately thought of Rich's brother Jim. Jim is a
classically trained (Grade 8 certificate) pianist and was recruited into Marshal
on the strength of him being a keyboard wizard and a comic genius. The
band show no signs of stopping and are constantly developing their epic, original
guitar sound further. They are always on the lookout to play more gigs, and chances
are they will be gigging near you soon so make sure you catch them while you can
as the stadium surely awaits. The
have recorded a 4-track EP, entitled 'Going up', which is available for purchase
from the band, Peoplesound,
or BURBS.
