I've been following any available information on Testify since the
original
Funhouse title was announced. It's been a long a tiring wait, and I'm
hoping
that it will soon be well worth the wait.
Before I'd ever heard of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I read that a song
called
"Tear Me Down" was to be on Testify, and immediately went to
CDNow to hear a
sample, and was blown away...soon after, I became a Hedwig junkie, and
began
researching the work and thoughts of Stephen Trask...writer of the music
from
Hedwig. For a year or so now, I have also been a Rent-head (fan of the
Broadway musical Rent), and was very insulted when I realized that Trask
has a
strong dislike for Rent...and began to wonder if I wanted to hear Meat
Loaf
working with someone who insults musical genius.
On other points, many reviews of Hedwig seem to mention a twist of Meat
and
other artists, including Julian Lennon, David Bowie, the Ramones, Kurt
Weill,
Lou Reed and many others. It seems by these reviews that Meat was destined
to
work with Trask (if not, God forbid, play Hedwig).
On a bitter note....
"Since its off-Broadway debut in 1998, Hedwig has been
successfully mounted in London, Germany and various U.S. cities. The
Toronto
run features Ted Dykstra (2 Pianos, 4 Hands) as Hedwig, the botched
transsexual, and an Angry Inch band led by Moe Berg (Pursuit of
Happiness).
The drama rests on a combination of titillation and alienation. The music
is a
mix of Bowie and, unfortunately, Meat Loaf. When it's good, Hedwig rocks;
when
it's bad, it's an overblown mess."
-- From a review on Eye.net.
I've also been put under the impression that there may be a b-side ballad
from
Hedwig? Wicked Little Town is the only one that comes to mind that I can
hear
Meat doing...
Anyway, looking forward to the album, whether a "Neighborhood
II" or not, it's
gonna be great.

I really can't believe
that Meat is releasing a new album - after all, I had pretty much accepted
that everything he had recorded up to THE VERY BEST OF in 1998 would have
to keep me going until my dieing day! (And so it easily could.) But Meat
has decided to take us all some place else. The journey really will
continue - and with an indestructible legacy of eternal gratitude burning
in the hearts and souls of kids like us.
As I write this, TESTIFY is feeling like a bit of a mystery - after
everything I have read there can be little doubt that nothing will prepare
us for what TESTIFY beholds. Its gonna have Rock N' Roll (check out the
awesome TEAR ME DOWN from the movie "Hedwig And The Angry
Inch"!), Diane Warren ballads, a spoken segment - all produced by
Peter Mokran of *NSync, Backstreet Boys and Brandy - so how's that for a
mix? I wonder if we get to hear those Steven Van Zandt songs that didn't
quite make it onto WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD?
As Tom has already said, TESTIFY will probably continue where WELCOME TO
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD left off. I just adore THE NEIGHBOURHOOD so much, and it
really hurts to hear a minority of people disown it just because it is not
entirely Jim Steinman. To them I just say, LISTEN TO IT!! It really does
take you there! Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE Jim Steinman fan - and its
very difficult when both artists go there separate ways, but I think we
just need to accept them as magicians in their own entity's - and when
they do come together, well, we all know what happens; so lets just be
glad for being blessed with their togetherness on Bat Out Of Hell and Bat
Out Of Hell II and the few songs in between and after, because anything
that beautiful I think just isn't meant to happen too often in a lifetime.
We got these new tablets advertised in the UK - they are called, "Kalm"
if I remember? They are supposed to keep any high person calm! Perhaps the
MEAT LOAF UK FAN CLUB would consider giving them out to all members when
TESTIFY is released? I don't know how Im going to deal with all the
excitement because this is my first complete Meat Loaf album as a Meat
Loaf fan - and I know it's the same for you too Tom!
Meat has NEVER once disappointed me in anything he has ever done. I guess
my real want is for TESTIFY to be recognised in the media - in the same
media that is saturated with all those unoriginal, here today, gone
tomorrow pop stars. TESTIFY is an opportunity for a whole new generation
who have heard nothing besides the same old trashy, recycled pop song for
the past 6 years, to discover something that'll just blow their minds,
because TESTIFY will for sure! And I say to Meats record company (whoever
you are these days…) don't let TESTIFY pass by without a fuss just
because Meat aint no dull pop star (wheres the website for starters?) - if
you do, then too many people will miss out on this extraordinary artist -
and that would surely be an act of sin. Talking of which, the only way
that TESTIFY could ever feel like it is missing something is if we don't
get to hear THAT other voice - yes, I do mean the voice of Patti Russo. I
think if I were Meat Id be so proud to have her record a solo track on my
album - even if it were just one of her songs from "Beethovens Last
Night", but used as like a bridging track? Patti is the ultimate
diva!
Oh, and have you heard Meat sing recently? David has some really cool MP3s
from "Night Of The Proms" on his website (http://www.MirrorOfTheSoul.com)
and oh God that voice has never sounded so beautiful or as powerful! The
cliche really is true when it comes to Meat: the best just gets better :

I have high hopes for
Testify! Being Meat's first full studio since Welcome To The Neighbourhood
we fans have had quite a wait, but I'm sure it'll be worth it. I've
noticed across the Web, that people are fearful that the absence of
Steinman in this record will be a big problem. There is no doubting that
Jimmy is a fantastic writer and that he and Meat work together as well as
anyone, but just take a look at the albums and tracks performed by Meat
without Steinman's writing, and some of them are amongst Meat's best!
I think the possible
album cover (See News) gives a good idea
of what we can expect. Its similarity to the Welcome cover makes me
believe that Testify will continue where Welcome left off, but with some
more experimentation and diversity - certainly not a problem!
I'm particularly excited about the possibility of the accompanying tour.
As ever, this would be epic, and personally I believe that Meat Loaf live
is better than any other artist I have seen on stage!
We have a lot to look
forward to with Testify but I'm certain we will not be disappointed. Just
a little more patience and it will be with us!
