Deirdre Rachid, Nee Hunt, Prev. Langton And Barlow: Actor: Anne Kirkbride 1973- First introduced as a dollbird sent to entertain Alan Howard by a business colleague, Deirdre soon fell for Billy Walker. They became engaged, but he then changed his mind so she married Ray Langton. Their daughter Tracy was born in 1977 and the following year the marriage broke up. Started work at the Corner Shop in 1980 and married Ken Barlow in 1981. Her affair with Mike Baldwin rocked her marriage, but it was finally wrecked in 1990 by Ken's affair with Wendy Crozier. Deidre was once a coucillor. In 1994, she fell for waiter Samir Rachid whilst holidaying in Morocco. She paid for him to come to England and they married. Their happiness was short lived as he died under mysterious circumstances in 1995.·· top ··
Samir Rachid,: Actor: Al Nedjari 1994-95 Deirdre Barlow's third husband. he was twenty-one-years-old when he married her, she was thirty-nine. He died on his way to hospital to donate a kidney to Deirdre's daughter Tracy.·· top ··
Eddie Ramsden,: Actor: William Ivory 1989-90 Builder who fell for barmaid Tina Fowler. He proposed to her to find a mother for his son Jamie, but jilted her during her hen night when Jamie's mother Marie agreed to marry him instead.·· top ··

Maggie Redman, Nee Dunlop,: Actor: Jill Kerman 1982-94 Florist who fell for Mike Baldwin and had his son, Mark. She refused to marry Mike and instead wed an old friend Harry Redman. Together they stood against Mike's attempts to influence Mark's life. After Harry's death she started a relationship with Mark's teacher Ken Barlow only to find he was Mike's arch enemy. She was upset when Mark befriended Mike and Mike sent him to a private school. In 1994, she moved to Felixstowe to marry again, taking Mark away from Mike.·· top ··
Mark Redman,: Actor: Thomas Hawkeswood, Christopher Oakes and Chris Cook 1983-94 Mike Baldwin and Maggie Dunlop's son. He was brought up thinking Harry Redman was his father and was amazed to learn from Tracy Barlow that it was really Mike. Mike paid for him to go to Oakhill Grammar School but he disliked Mike's interference in his life. He was relieved to move away from Weatherfield and Mike to start a new life in Felixstowe.·· top ··
Concepta Regan, Nee Riley, Prev. Hewitt,: Actor: Doreen Keogh 1960-75 First barmaid at the Rovers who married harry Hewitt in 1961. She struggled to be accepted by Harry's daughter Lucille. Her son Christopher was born in 1962 and kidnapped months later. Concepta suffered a breakdown before he was found two days later. In 1964, the Hewitts emigrated to Ireland. They returned for Elsie Tanner's wedding in 1967, but Harry was killed and she returned to Ireland a widow. In 1972 she married a young mechanic, Sean Regan. In 1975 she visited the Street to see Bet Lynch off when she discovered Sean had made a pass at her.·· top ··
Malcolm Reid,: Actor: Shane Rimmer 1988 Canadian who adopted Audrey Roberts' son Stephen. He visited the Roberts and begged Audrey to leave Alf for him, but she refused.·· top ··

He moved into the flat over Frank Barlow's shop, but left after Ken's wife Valerie declared her love for him. After Val's death, he and Ken were reconciled and they started a jazz band.·· top ··
Renee Roberts, Nee Bradshaw,: Actor: Madge Hindle 1987-80 Supermarket checkout assistant who bought the Corner Shop with her life savings in order to provide a stable home for her brother terry, but he soon left the Street to join the army. She fought Annie Walker in court and was successful in being granted a licence to sell alcohol. She married Alf Roberts in March 1978 despite her family's warnings that he was after the shop. The couple decided to sell up and move to Grange before she was killed in a car crash in July 1980.·· top ··
Alf Roberts OBE,: Actor: Bryan Mosley 1961- Twice Mayor of Weatherfield. Alf started as a GPO sorter, working with Frank Barlow. Following the death, in 1972, of his wife Phyllis, he courted Maggie Clegg and was heartbroken when she married someone else. He became a counsellor in 1968 and was elected Mayor in 1973, his Mayoress being Annie Walker. he lost his council seat in 1987 when Deirdre Barlow beat him, but four years later won the seat back and was made Mayor in 1994. In 1976, Alf had a relationship with canteen lady Donna Parker, but she ran off with his money. Two years later he married Renee Bradshaw and moved into the Corner Shop which she ran. He was in a coma and then suffered a personality change after a lorry crashed into the Rovers in 1979. Following this, he left the GPO to help Renee run the shop. Renee was killed in 1980 and he remained at the shop, marrying Audrey Potter in 1985. They lived at No.11, Coronation Street before moving to leafy Grassmere Drive. In 1994, Alf retired.·· top ··

Ena Sharples: Actor: Violet Carson 1960-80 Caretaker of the Mission Glad Tidings until it was demolished in 1968. In the early days, she fought to uphold the Street's morals, taking on Elsie Tanner and Hilda Ogden. With Minnie Caldwell and Martha Longhurst and a glass of Milk Stout, she held court in the Rovers' Snug. Her family life was harsh because her vicious, criticising tongue alienated her daughters Vera and Madge. She had one son Ian who had died as a babe in arms and she never remarried after her husband Alfred died in the Depression. In 1965, Ena inherited No.11 making her Elsie's landlady and she soon sold the house. For most of her life she struggled for cash and was once found guilty of shoplifting. Ena continuously took on those in authority over injustice - she organised a sit-in at an OAP hut to stop its demolition, and fought Laurie Frazer's plans to open a nightclub in the Street. When the Mission was demolished she looked after the Community Centre but old age caused her problems - she collapsed three times with heart problems. However, the Street's residents always closed ranks around her at the Centre. Even mild-mannered Ernie Bishop brawled with a Counsellor when he tried to evict her. Lorna Shawcross: Actor: Luan Peters 1971 Nurse who lodged at the Rovers for a couple of months and went out with Billy Walker. He was heartbroken when she left to marry someone else.·· top ··
Sean Skinner: Actor: Terence Hillyer 1994- Betting shop owner, Sean opened a shop on Rosamund Street and employed Des Barnes as his manager. Following his divorce from wife Lynne he made a pass at Liz McDonald, but she rejected him.·· top ··
Dave Smith: Actor: Reginald Marsh 1962-76 Cockney bookie who ruled as top dog in Weatherfield in the early 1970s, keeping the villains under control and protecting the interests of the residents. His on-off affair with Elsie Tanner lasted for ten years, during which time he also dated Irma Barlow. Although his main business concern was his betting shop on Victoria Street, he also owned Weatherfield Country football club and for a while ran a hair salon. After fire gutted the warehouse on Coronation Street he attempted to open a cash-and-carry warehouse on the site, but met with too much opposition from the residents. Effie Spicer: Actor: Anne Dyson 1968-69 Widow of a famous sports' journalist, Mrs Spicer moved into one of the maisonattes built on the Street and fell foul of her neighbour Ena Sharples who thought her a snob. Effie soon fell into debt and then left the area.·· top ··
Marie Stanton: Actor: Lois Baxter 1976-77 Divorcee who made a play for Mike Baldwin when working as a machinist at his factory.·· top ··
Jean Stark: Actor: Rennie Lister 1961 Machinist at the raincoat factory who rebelled against her strict parents to lodge with Christine Hardman at No.13. She had a brief fling with Jed Stone.·· top ··
Wilk Stockwell: Actor: Terence Longdon 1981-82 Mike Baldwin's business associate who left his wife Doreen for Elsie Tanner. Doreen created such a fuss that an order was cancelled and Baldwins was put on a three-day week.·· top ··
Jed Stone: Actor: Kenneth Cope 1961-66 Petty criminal who became a surrogate son for Minnie Caldwell. He came to the Street to entice Dennis Tanner back into a life of crime, but had a quick personality change to endear him into Minnie's heart. He was full of get-rich-quick schemes which always seemed to backfire, he ran a market stall, opened an auction room, a boarding kennels and stored old waxworks. His attempts of romance - with Jean Stark and Doreen Lostock - were even less successful than his business ventures. In 1966, he was arrested for handling stolen goods and sent to prison for nine months.·· top ··
Gary Strauss: Actor: Callen Angelo 1967-70 American army sergeant and friend of Gregg Flint and Steve Tanner. He dated Lucille Hewitt and Bet Lynch during his stay in Weatherfield and left after Joe Donnelli's suicide.·· top ··
Pauline Stringer: Actor: Patricia Browning 1980 Supervisor at Baldwin's Casual brought in by Mike to shake up the girls. They had a brief affair, but he soon got tired of her socialist values.·· top ··
Sandra Stubbs: Actor: Sally Watts 1988-89 The Rovers cleaner who struggled to bring her thirteen year old son Jason up single handed. Her husband Ronnie tracked her down and beat her up before been seen off by the police. Sandra was gutted when Gloria Todd stole her boyfriend Pete Shaw, and left the Rovers to live with her mother when she feared Jason was mixing with the wrong crowd.·· top ··

Percy Sugden: Actor: Bill Waddington 1983- Having driven a mobile canteen across the Western Desert, Percy attempted to organise the Street's residents into an army of residents fighting under his banner of Home Watch. Interfering and pompous Percy first came into the Street when he was made caretaker of the Community Centre. A widower (wife Mary had died of cancer in 1978), Percy had no children, but his niece Elaine stayed with him before marrying Bill Webster. Percy has always been attracted to Emily Bishop - she took him in at No. 3 when he retired from the Centre - but she views him only as a lodger. Phyllis Pearce pursued him for years but he was never interested in her. In 1993, he proposed to Olive Clark. She turned him down but Maud Grimes accepted him. However, he finished with Maud when he discovered she had been unfaithful to her husband during the war. Percy retired from the Centre in 1998, since then he has served as a lollipop man and a Betterbuys Father Christmas.·· top ··
Rita Sullivan, Nee Littlewood, Prev. Fairclough: Actor: Barbara Knox 1964- The owner of the Cabin newsagents at No. 10 made her first appearance on the Street as erotic dancer at the Viaduct Sporting Club. Rita drifted from her dancing career into singing ballads and love songs in nightclubs and sleazy mens clubs. In 1972 she started a relationship with Len Fairclough, whom she eventually married in 1977. At that time she was calling herself Rita Bates, but later she revealed herself to be only Harry Bates' common-law wife. During her on-off affair with Len, she had relationships with other men, notably Ken Barlow, Jimmy Graham and Benny Lewis. In 1973 Len Employed her at the Kabin and she started her working relationship with Mavis Riley. Her marriage to Len was stormy but together they fostered Sharon Gaskill. After Len's death in 1983, Rita shied away from men until in 1987, she moved Alan Bradley into No.7. She twice refused to marry Alan (once outside the registry office when he tricked her into going to her own wedding) and eventually he turned against her, cheated her out of money and then tried to kill her. When he was released from prison, Rita suffered from a nervous breakdown and took a job singing in Blackpool. He followed her, chased her, and was knocked down and killed by a tram. In 1990 Rita moved into the Kabin from Rosamund Street to its present site and moved into a flat over the shop. She married Ted Sullivan in 1992 knowing he had a fatal brain tumour. He died a few months later in her arms.·· top ··
Ted Sullivan: Actor: William Russell 1992 Sweet salesman Ted retired from his job when he learnt he had only months to live. He courted Rita Fairclough in a whirlwind romance and married her in a register office. They had a few precious months together before he died watching Percy Sugden play bowls.·· top ··
Arnold Swain: Actor: George Waring 1980 - 81 Pet shop owner who married Emily Bishop when he already had a wife, Margaret. When Emily discovered he was a bigamist, he left her and suffered a breakdown, returning to force her into a suicide pact. She escaped his clutches and he was arrested by the police. In December 1981, he died in a hospital for the mentally disturbed.·· top ··
Leonard Swindley: Actor: Arthur Lowe 1960 - 65 Lay preacher Swindley was jilted at the altar by Emily Nugent. For years, Emily had been his assistant, at first his drapery store and then, when it was taken over, at the chain store Gamma Garments. Swindley, a pompous, selfish man lived in fear of Gamma boss Mr Papagopolous who had a habit of telephoning during a crisis - of which there were many. At the Mission Hall, Swindley had numerous battles with caretaker Ena Sharples, of which he never won a single one. In 1962 he stood for the poll. Eventually he left the area to work at Gamma House.·· top ··
Ron Sykes: Actor: Bobby Knutt 1980 - 83 Brian Tilsley's boss at sykes' Garage. In 1982 he went into partnership with Brian, opening another garage, but he soon lost interest and let Brian buy him out.·· top ··

Elsie, Tanner: Actor: Actor: Patricia Howard 1960 - 83 The Siren of the Street throughout the 1960s, Elsie had a passion for men and got hurt by all of them. Her many lovers included Len Fairclough, Norman Lindley, Dave Smith, Bill Gregory, Laurie Frazer, Jim Mount, Ron Mather and Don Johnson. Her relationship with Len lasted twenty years but, although he proposed twice, she knew she could never marry him as he was her best friend. She separated from husband Arnold after the war and struggled to bring up Dennis and Linda while entertaining her men friends. In 1967 she married American Steve Tanner who had been her wartime sweetheart. Unfortunately she soon discovered he was a selfish drunk and they separated. Three years later she married Alan Howard and he moved into her home, No.11, where they lived for three years - the longest time she ever spent with one man. When the marriage went through a bad patch they went to live in his native Newcastle, and in 1976 she returned home to the street alone. In later years, Elsie struggled to keep glamour in her life but she found herself with sleazy one-night stands and dead-end jobs. When we first met Elsie she was working at Miami Modes in the slightly Better Dress Department, a job she also worked as a croupier, a model, a florist, a receptionist and a salesperson. In 1983, Bill Gregory re-entered her life (she had an affair with him in 1962). He whisked her off to Portugal to help run his wine bar and gave her story the fairy-tale ending for which she had always longed.·· top ··
Arnold, Tanner: Actor: Frank Crawshaw 1961 - 66 First husband of Elsie Tanner, and father of Dennis and Linda. He divorced Elsie to marry Norah Dawson (she owned her own toffee shop), and in later life had to suffer his cantankerous father Wally living over the shop.·· top ··
Dennis, Tanner: Actor: Philip Lowrie 1960 - 68 Elsie Tanner's wayward son came out of borstal in 1960 but soon settled down in an attempt to make something of his life. He tried various careers - salesman, warehouse labourer, taxi-driver, hair stylist, auctioneer, builders labourer, turf accountant - but kept returning to his true passion, show business. Dennis worked for the Phillips-Frazer agency as booking clerk, talent scout, compere and even nightclub singer, but was too naive to climb the ladder of success. Women seldom bothered Dennis, although Sandra Petty fell in love with him and pursued him through 1965. He once dated two Swedish sisters, the Olsens, and hired his home, No. 11, out to a nine-piece girl's pipe band.In 1968, he fell for cockney Jenny Sutton and, despite Elsie's opposition (she thought Jenny too much like her), they married in the May. Shortly afterwards the couple moved to Bristol where he found work selling hairdressing equipment. In 1973, Elsie visited him he was serving a sentence for swindling OAPs.·· top ··
Jenny, Tanner, Nee Sutton: Actor: Mitzi Rogers 1968 Cockney who came to the Street in search of her hippie sister Monica who had been part of the commune ataying at No.11 Jenny fell for Dennis Tanner and stayed on to be near him, working with him in a hotel. They married in May 1968 and moved to Bristol.·· top ··
Steve, Tanner: Actor: Paul Maxwell 1967 American GI who returned to Weatherfield to court his wartime sweetheart, Elsie Tanner. They had a fairytale wedding and moved to a luxury apartment in Altrincham where the marriage broke up - he gambled and drank and refused to let her mix with her old friends. They left for America when he was posted home, but she returned to England after three months. Steve followed but never saw Elsie again - he was murdered by Joe Donelli over a gambling debt.·· top ··
Wally, Tanner: Actor: George Betton 1966-69 Elsie Tanner's father in law who gave up the life of a tramp to live at No.11 and make a play for Minnie Caldwell.·· top ··
Albert, Tatlock: Actor: Jack Howarth 1960 - 84 Pensioner who was the original occupant of No.1 Coronation Street. He had served in the First World War and never tired of retelling famous battles to all those who would listen. Although retired, Albert took a few jobs to earn extra cash - lollipop man, caretaker at the Mission, and Ena Sharples' assistant at the centre. He spent two tears living in Bury where he served as a curator at the Lancashire Fusilier Museum. His wife Bessie had died in 1959 and his daughter Beattie seldom visited. During the 1960s his niece Valerie kept an eye on him, and after her death, her husband, Ken promptly took on the responsibility. In 1969, he nearly married Alice Pickens but called it off on the wedding day when the vicar was late getting to the church. In 1973, he proposed to Minnie Caldwell, on the basis that they would save money on a joint pension. Minnie accepted his proposal when she discovered that he had got his facts wrong. His eightieth birthday, in 1975, was celebrated by the residents with a street party. The hardest thing for Albert to live with was the fact that one by one his old comrades died off. Eventually the old soldier died himself at the age of eighty-eight.·· top ··
Edith, Tatlock: Actor: Clare Kelly 1969-78 Valerie Barlow's mother. Following Val's death she lived at No.3 with Ken and the twins to live in Glasgow as Ken could not cope.·· top ··
Brenda, Taylor: Actor: Marlene Sidaway 1990-92 Mother of Kimberly and wife of GPO engineer Randolph. She objected to Curly Watts and did all in her power to split them up. She succeeded once but they found each other again.·· top ··
Kimberly, Taylor: Actor: Suzanne Hall 1989-92 Assistant at Bettabuy who fell for Curly 'Norman' Watts and tormented him by refusing to sleep with him until they were married. His lust drove her to break their engagement and she promptly gave her virginity to her cousin Adrian Gosthorpe. In 1992, she joined a computer dating agency and met Curly again. This time she did sleep with him but they separated.·· top ··
Eddie, Thomas: Actor: Douglas Austin 1964 Len Fairclough's apprentice who helped to build the Viaduct Sporting Club, he dated Lucille Hewitt but dumped her for Len's girlfriend, Joyce Lomax.·· top ··
Roy, Thornley: Actor: Stanley Livingstone 1976 Married sales rep who seduced Gail Potter, taking her virginity and then stood by while his wife cited her in their divorce.·· top ··
Bert, Tilsley: Actor: Peter Dudley 1979-83 Ivy Brennan's first husband and father of Brian. Down to earth Bert worked in the foundaries all his life and never spent more than the odd hour in the pub, preferring to spend his spare time with his family. He was delighted when Brain married Gail and acted as a go-between whenever Ivy fell out with her. He lost his job in 1980 and was unemployed for eighteen months. He suffered a mini-stroke and died shortly after being involved in an explosion in Brian's garage.·· top ··
Brian, Tilsley: Actor: Christopher Quentin 1978-89 Mechanic and motorbike fanatic Brian moved into Coronation Street with his parents Bert and Ivy in February 1979. He quickly became engaged to neighbour Gail despite his mothers misgivings (she was Catholic, she was C of E). Throughout his marriage to Gail, Brian enjoyed flirting and got too close for comfort to customer Glenda Fox and teenager Sharon Gaskill. Brian believed that Gails place was in the home and following the birth of their son, Nicky he did all he could to stop her working at Jim's Cafe. In 1981, he appeared in court after stopping a thug from stealing from the garage till - the youth brought a charge of unlawful wounding, but Brian was cleared. When Gail had an affair with his cousin Ian Latimer, he divorced her, refusing to believe that her daughter Sarah Louise was his. He moved in with Liz Turnbull, but his obsession with Gail and Nicky drove them apart. He was reconciled with Gail when he kidnapped Nicky and held him for four days. He remarried Gail in February 1988, but she never really loved him and he started seeing other women. He was stabbed to death outside a nightclub in 1989.·· top ··
Sam, Tindall: Actor: Tom Mennard 1985-89 Percy Sugden's bowls rival who fell for Phyllis Pearce. She led him along to make Percy jealous.·· top ··
Gloria, Todd: Actor: Sue Jenkins 1985-88 Rovers' barmaid and Bet Gilroy's bridesmaid. She became a regular behind the bar after the Rovers' fire, and became the subject of attention from Bet's boyfriend Frank Mills, Terry Duckworth, Jack Duckworth, Mike Baldwin and Alan Bradley. She had an affair with Alan, until she discovered that he was also seeing Rita Fairclough. In 1986, she was reconciled to her mother who had given her away when she was four. She left the district with Pete Shaw, Sandra Stubbs' boyfriend.·· top ··
Betty, Turpin: Actor: Betty Driver 1969 For over twenty-five years Betty has pulled pints at the Rovers and served he famous hot-pot to the regulars. She came to the Street to help her sister Maggie Clegg run the Corner Shop living above the shop with her husband Cyril. Jack Walker took her on at the Rovers and she served under all the licensees - Annie and Billy Walker, Bet and Alec Gilroy and now Jack and Vera Duckworth! Betty's dark secret was revealed in 1975 - Maggies son Gordon was actually her's, his father being a sailor, Ted Farell. Gordon accepted Betty as his mother and she often sees him and his son Peter. When Cyril died in 1974, she suffered a breakdown but her friends helped her recover. She was mugged in 1982 and her arm broken. In 1994 she took over from Audrey Roberts as Mayoress of Weatherfield.·· top ··
Cyril, Turpin: Actor: William Moore 1969-72 Betty's police sergeant husband who lived above the corner shop and policed the local area. He retired from the force in 1970, after assaulting a convict who had been terrorising Betty. In 1974 he suffered a fatal heart attack.·· top ··
