Restoration

See how a Mk1 Campaign regains the look of youth!

01/03

The black campaign model is awaiting it's first preparation. A short trip along the motorway towards Southampton and the paint
stripping will begin, both interior and exterior. All the seats, bumpers, grilles, handles mirrors etc will be removed. This
is the first stage of the Campaign's restoration.

At some point in their life, all Mk1s should be repainted, e.g. taken to bare metal so any rust that's present can be removed.
Rust is one of the biggest killers, to bodywork and chassis, and spreads like a disease. It also gives you a chance to repair
any body panels that may have been dented.

WagenWheels is a garage/dealer specialising in the Mk1 Golf, and other performance cars and classics. The owner, a Mk1 enthusiast,
likes things to be done properly. There is no room for compromise. And since my car will going to GTI International later
in the year, it needs to be looking fresh-out-the-box.

On this page you will find a step-by-step diary of events, as the black campaign is given a much deserved make-over. If you own
a car you are thinking of restoring, this article will be of great interest to you.
The whole process of stripping and repainting needs to be done professionally, otherwise it will look like an amateur job.
A proper repaint requires a full priming, painting and then baking in a paint oven. And even then, everyone has different
ideas of what a high standard paint job should look like. In my book, it should look perfect, factory fresh. This is quite
difficult, and usually very expensive, so that's why I've taken my campaign to WagenWheels for it's restoration.

Restoration Diary

January

Restoration work will begin soon, with a complete picture diary and explanation of procedures along the way. Check back regularly
for the updates.

The Process:

Stage 1:

Preparation; paint stripping & parts removal.

Stage 2:

Body work, dent & rust removal. Priming for paintjob.

Stage 3:

Professional repaint, using original colour.

Stage 4:

Out with the old, in with the new. Restore, refurbish or replace all parts and accessories that are looking old and worn.
Including alloy wheel restoration, interior and exterior trim replacements etc.

Stage 5:

Cleaning the engine. Waxing & sealing of the bodyshell, to get every nook and cranny.

Stage 6:

Re-building; the interior and exterior trim is put back onto the car, before the final once-over check.
