.: Gremlins (1984)

Gremlins poster

........A tribute the 1950s matinee genre, Gremlins never eases up on the action or its sense of suspense. Numerous references to old films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers further the nostalgic appeal. - Ryan Cracknell, Rotten Tomatoes.

.: Joe Dante's feature takes the small town terror theme and mixes it with a dash of domestic pet responsibility propaganda, and viola a terrorific masterpiece.

.: Mayhem is unleashed when a cute cuddly creature, known as Mogwai, is wrongfully bought from a mystical oriental store and given as a gift. Like with all pets comes responsibility, this little chap is not to be meant to be fed after midnight or exposed to water and sunlight. All these rules are swiftly broken and Gizmo, as the creature is nicknamed, starts giving birth to narky little fuzzballs with attitude, who mutate and wreak havoc throughout the idyllic town.

.: References to the 50s SF genre are littered throughout the film which would have been perfectly suited to the teen drive-in of the time. A huge movie-licence cash in followed, as with Mars Attacks, with excess merchandising in various formats from model kits to video games.
The sequel, Gremlins 2 - The New Batch (1990) was also an entertaining follow-up, taking the terror from the small town to the city.

.: Let's not mention the Furby?
