- 26/07/98 - Robert Hart's forest
garden
Following the end of the design course, Alpai organized a couple of workdays at the forest garden at Margret MacMillan’s kindergarten. As suggested during the course, we decided to take a trip to visit Robert Hart and his forest garden. About 10 of us came along. Robert took us around his forest garden explaining the idea of a garden which works, like a forest, as a stable and diverse system. In Robert's forest garden this is achieved by the staking of about seven layers of plants (high canopy; low and shade-tolerant trees; shrubs and bushes; herbs; horizontal creepers; root plants; vertical creepers) Almost all plants are perennial food plants to achieve a minimum of work and energy input into the system. Robert claims that he isn’t doing much more than harvesting and mulching. There was also a composting toilet and a willow patch for living mulch and basket making. Throughout the weekend, Robert and the group were followed around by a camera team, who were in the process of making a new film about Robert Hart's work. During the course of the weekend, they interviewed Robert extensively. My guitar playing was recorded for the film. The film is now available in english and as a german translation under the title "The Forest Gardener"
