Welcome to
Welcome to version 2 of Neb's Countdown site, the semi-interactive website dedicated to the Channel 4 game show "Countdown", and to all its fans and contestants, not to mention its legendary hosts Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman. Version 1 of this site ran from August 25th until January 31st, and accumulated almost 2600 hits in that time.
This is not the only website dedicated to the show, however- links to several others (as well as articles about former players) can be found on my links page. All of them are worth visiting at some point or another, I hasten to add.
Any suggestions/complaints/general feedback, e-mail me at hulla.mahulla@btopenworld.com and I'll be sure to (try) to get back to you. All entries for the competition should be sent to the address on the competition page. If you want to talk about Countdown to other fans (not to mention Countdowners of yore), then I recommend you visit Gevin Chapwell's Countdown forum, which you can access by clicking
HERE, or on the
"forums" link at the top of any page on the site.
If you know of any other discussion forums relating to Countdown, drop me a line at the above address and I'll be sure to put them on here
too, or at the very least, on the links page.
If you wish to e-mail your queries/compliments/jokes for Richard to read at the start of the show directly to the Countdown team, then this is the address you want- countdown@channel4.com
WEEKLY UPDATE, SUNDAY 11TH MAY 2003
Another week has passed in Countdown land, bringing with it
what is, for the series especially, a rarity- congratulations go to John Davies,
yet another great Countdowner from the city of Preston, for winning all five of
this week's games with some impressive scores (once in the eighties, three in
the nineties and 106 on Friday) and some even more impressive numbers games. As
it stands, John, having won 6 so far, is already #1 seed, but can he go two
better and become the series's first Octochamp? There's only one way to find
out, and that's to watch his 7th game on Monday and, should he be triumphant
again, to watch his eighth game on Tuesday. I'm sure you'll all join me in
wishing him the best of luck!
Good luck wishes also go to fellow Countdown webmaster Martin
Gardner, who makes his debut on the show on Wednesday (just narrowly missing
John Davies? Maybe). Good luck, Martin!
This week, the site has seen a good few updates as well. As
promised, I have added a few more links, including the websites of Jerry
Humphreys (who also makes his debut next week) and Andrew
Tatham (who appeared on the show two months ago, winning 5 before losing to
Beth Sutton in a game detailed in the archive). The archive
has also had a new entry to it, Chris
Wills nominating his Champion of Champions game against David Williams, a
game which is widely believed to be one of the greatest games of all time-
close, high-scoring on both sides, and with some very good words, too.
And, of course, more former Countdowner articles (thanks as always go to Mauro
Pratesi)- this week, the theme is "Champions of Champions", as
articles on Clive Freedman and triple
crown winner Don Reid have been added for your
enjoyment. I've also updated the poll archive with
details of February-April's poll.
Next week I'll do the promised merchandise reviews I didn't get time to this week, as well as adding two more articles to the greats page. Plus, of course, any archive games and player profiles which happen to fall into my inbox in between now and then.
On that note, though, I have an appeal to make- while recent
games are all well and good, there must be some Countdowners out there from
"the olden times" (anything pre-2001 will do) who feel they're worthy
of a place in the hall of fame (and trust me, you are), and have great games
they remember participating in. So, I beg you, if you have great games, or wish
to write a profile, just e-mail them to me at hulla.mahulla@btopenworld.com
and they will go up here on the site, I promise you. The archive games don't
even have to be that detailed- just the selections and what the two contestants
declared will do, I can find out the rest of the details from thecountdownpage.com.
Thank you for listening.
Until next weekend, then, I guess it's adios from me.

THE BI-MONTHLY POLL
May's and June's poll revolves around the fairer sex- there have undoubtedly been many great female countdowners over the years, but which one was the greatest of all? Ten to choose from, as always. Voting ends June 30th (and this time, barring any more disasters, I mean it).
To view results of all former polls, simply click HERE
Feel free to leave a message on my tag-board, or to enter a more detailed entry into my guestbook. Any and all feedback about the site or show is welcome, and if you have any questions/suggestions for the site, leave your e-mail address and I'll be sure to get back to you. However, if any messages are left on the board/in the book that I deem to be "inappropriate", then I will not hesitate to remove them.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this site- to Tom Hargreaves, Chris Wills, Kevin Thurlow and Julian Fell for games for the archive/for player profiles, to Mauro Pratesi for e-mailing me all those articles and pictures, and many thanks also go to Martin Gardner and Mike Brown for pointing out mistakes, and for inspiring me to believe that a website dedicated to Countdown wouldn't die a total death. I'd also like to thank everyone who entered the monthly challenge, it was, and indeed still is, most appreciated. Thanks also go to Michael Wylie, Damian Eadie, and all involved at YTV and Granada Media for producing the show, to Richard and Carol for hosting it for so many years, and to Channel 4 for broadcasting it and making all our teatimes that little bit better. Last, but most certainly not least, many thanks go to the late Armand Jammot for creating Des Chiffres et Des Lettres, without which there would be no Countdown today.
Di-di, di-di, diddly di- BOOW!
