Audouin's Gull
Dungeness, Kent, 6th May 2003

I was at Minsmere and Sizewell on Sunday (5th) when news broke of this bird and opted to 'go for it' the following morning. Then yesterday (6th) I was on the verge of turning around and going back home after hearing that the Audouin's had been seen to fly out to sea and was lost to view, but a timely phone call informed of it being back at 'the patch' so I and Steve Blain got to 'Dunge' as quick as we could, when we arrived the bird had not been seen for about 40 minutes, 'dip-panic' set in.
It was not long though before it was re-found with other Gulls sitting on the grass near the fishing boats, about 500 or so yards from the main group of birders, we got there and had brief views before the whole flock took to the air, still no photos.
A pint of Boddingtons in 'The Britannia' then egg and chips in the cafe filled the gap left by not having had breakfast, it was about 2p.m. when we set off to see if the Audouin's was on show any more, and show it did, it cruised up and down the beach for some time, just along the tide-line, and then continued to do this at intervals for the rest of the afternoon.
Steve and I then met up with Paul Hackett and after watching the bird until dusk ended the day with fish and chips at 'the Pilot' cheers Paul, it was a good day.
