Information about
the School
General Information
St. Luke's School is a
day special school in Scunthorpe for pupils ages from 3 to 16 years who have
severe learning difficulties (SLD).
The school is able to admit up to 80 pupils. It serves a wide area including the towns of Scunthorpe, Barton
on Humber and Brigg and other towns and villages in the surrounding countryside
of North Lincolnshire. The North
Lincolnshire Council is the Local Education Authority.
St. Luke's School is the
only special school specifically for pupils with SLD serving the North
Lincolnshire area. However, some
pupils with SLD may go to mainstream schools with support and to other special
schools for individual reasons.
The Work of the School
The school aims to:
provide an education tailored to meet the
needs of each individual pupil;
develop the knowledge, concepts, skills and
attitudes which each individual pupil must acquire if he or she is to become as
independent as possible and participate as much as possible in the life of his
or her family, the school and the community in which we live;
provide activities which are meaningful,
enjoyable and enriching;
encourage each pupil to behave in a way
which is appropriate to his or her age, given his or her learning difficulties;
equip each pupil with the skills which he or
she will need as a young adult after leaving school;
provide the staff and equipment required to
meet their individual needs;
provide advice and support for the pupils'
families.
The Special Educational Needs of the Pupils
All pupils have severe
problems in learning. These problems
are due, probably, to some kind of brain damage acquired before, during and
after their birth. Often the nature and
causes of this damage are unknown and when it is known it can take many forms
and have different results. Due to the
nature of their disabilities, most pupils will remain highly dependent on
others for their personal welfare and care well into their adult years.
About 15-20 per cent of
the pupils are thought to have an autistic spectrum disorder. All have severe social and communication
difficulties, but their individual needs vary greatly. Hence the need for an individual education
plan for each pupil.
The School
The school is split
between two sites currently. There is
the main site in Burghley Road and the St. Luke’s School Annexe, for 8 to 14
year olds, on the site of St. Hugh’s School in Bushfield Road, Scunthorpe. St. Hugh's School is the only other special
school maintained by North Lincolnshire LEA and its serves for pupils with
moderate to severe learning difficulties.
There is a swimming pool
at St. Hugh’s School and community pools which are used.
Three classrooms for
teenage pupils have been equipped with kitchen facilities for teaching domestic
skills.
There is a separate
Nursery classroom.
There are no specialist
classes for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders. Most classes consist of heterogeneous groups. Some special groupings have been set up for
children with autism in order to meet their specific needs. In all classes there is much emphasis on
establishing routines and structures, on teaching social and communication
skills, and on the use of visual language systems.
Specialist advice is
available from the teacher-in-charge of the LEA's Support Service for Pupils
with Autistic Spectrum Disorders who is based at the school. All teachers and many support staff have
received relevant training. An
extensive professional development library has been developed.
The School Curriculum
The school curriculum is
more fully described in a separate leaflet which is available on request. The school curriculum includes the National
Curriculum for pupils aged from 5 - 16 years.
Specialist technologies
of proven worth are used systematically throughout the school with modification
to suit individual needs. For instance,
elements of the TEACCH and PECS approach are used.
All class groups have
access to appropriate microcomputers. All
are equipped with the adjustable trolleys, specialist switches, hardware and
software required to make them useful and accessible to all pupils.
Older pupils also make
full use of the local community's resources and facilities for 'life skills'
programme. They attend link courses at
local colleges and local schools which both enhance the curriculum and promote
the development of a more inclusive society.
The school receives many
visits annually from students, teachers, other professionals and interested
people in the local community. Parents
and visitors who have an interest in the work of the school are always welcome.

Details
of services provided: The Portage Service provides
a home visiting service for families whose young children (0 to 5 years) have
developmental delays which are likely to result in special educational needs at
school. Portage home visitors visit families on a regular weekly or fortnightly
basis.
We
aim to work together with parents and/or carers to assess their child’s
abilities/skills and develop programmes and strategies to help the parent to
help the child. We consult with other agencies to ensure continuity – in the
case of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) these agencies are likely
to be Speech and Language Therapy, Support Service for children with Autistic
Spectrum Disorders, Child Development Centre education support staff, and
therapists.
It
is quite often the case that the Portage Service is involved with families
prior to as well as during and after their child is recognised as having ASD.

of services provided: The teacher and nursery
nurse at the C.D.C. run 6 or 7 sessions each week. The majority of groups are a
generic mix of children 2 – 5 yrs. old with special needs. Children with ASD
are included in these groups with specific objectives and strategies planned to
address their individual needs.
One
group per week is specifically for children with ASD or severe communication
delays/disorders. The children have an individual staff member assigned to them
each week. Intervention is based on a TEACCH type approach which two staff
members are trained in. PECS is also used when appropriate. This session is
staffed by Education Service staff, ASD service staff, speech and Language
Therapist with oversight from Clinical Psychology. All staff members have
attended many ASD specific courses. Support and advice for carers, other
providers and professionals is available.
