Macro is defined when the image on the film, i.e the negative or slide, is the same size as the actual object photographed.
This is called lifesize and is expressed as 1x or 1:1.To understand it think of something measuring 24mm x 36mm filling the
frame. That is the size of a 35mm negative!
 I recently acquired
a specialst lens for macro work which goes to lifesize and there are a few here.

4 Glass beads

4 tiny glass beads from a vase placed on an address book which is covered in purple holographic paper. I used a standard 50mm
lens with +4 close up lens. The lighting is an ordinary anglepoise lamp and so I had to fit an 80A filter to correct the colour.

Conker shell, November 03

This is what a conker shell looks like when photographed at lifesize!

Lilly Stamens

I used the 75-300 with a +4 lens attached to give a magnification of about 1.2:1 lifesize.
Theres evidence of chromatic aberration here, i.e. colour fringing around the edges but it's not too bad.

Tiny flower

This is kind of knotgrass:

Annual plant belonging to the dock family. The bases of the small lance-shaped leaves enclose the slender stems, giving a superficial resemblance to grass. Small pinkish flowers are followed by seeds that are eaten by birds. Knotgrass grows worldwide except in the polar regions.

(Polygonum aviculare, family Polygonaceae.)

It is found on bare ground including seashores. Often low-growing, it may have stems up to 2 m/6 ft long.(from Dictionary of plants )

Bramble Leaf-March 03

Taken on the way home, I saw the light shining through this remaining bramble leaf, left over from autumn. I crouched down, hand-held the camera at 1/2 lifesize and waitied for the breeze to stop.

Keys

This was taken while at college, and is close to lifesize.

Building a home-March 03

A spider web being built atop a gorse branch. About 1/4 lifesize.

Poppy Head

I brought this indoors and photographed it from above. I used the Cosina camera with its 35-70 lens and attached a close up lens to give about 1/4 lifesize.

Horse Chestnut or Conker shoot

This is a lifesize close up of a shoot from a conker tree
(Aesculus hippocastanum)

Spiderling amongst Aloe flowers

This was taken with the macro lens at about half life size.

Conifer Tip-March 03

This is the tip of a conifer branch, new growth.Taken this close up(lifesize on film) it looks plastic! First colour photo taken with the macro lens seen at left.

Bubbles-March 03

I put some plant stems in a milk bottle filed with water and next day there were all these bubbles inside the glass, so I
sety up my camera on a tripod and homed in with the macro lens. This is lifesize!(On film at least!)

Teasel Head-March 03

I brought this home to photograph as it was too windy outside. Shot at lifesize using natural light with an exposure of 15 seconds!

Cotton buds

Ordinary household cotton buds at aboiut half lifesize!

Peanut plant

To photograph this extreme close up I attached a 50 mm lens in reverse onto my 100mm macro lens. This gives a magnification of 2X (2:1)
