Character Creation

Now onto character creation... aren't you so excited? Yesh... good.  I can smell it on you.  The blissful joy, the childlike excuberance, the... the... the STENCH!  Take a shower man, that's just wrong...

Anyway...

Character creation can be a lot of fun if you really get into your character, or you can just slop one together and not have a good time.  Some people prefer to add depth to their character as it comes up in the RP, just going off of the top of their head.  Others have a long history written out that they use as guidelines.  It's completely up to you what you do, as each person has their own style.  This is just a compiled list of my suggestions, and who knows, I might help for once.

"YOU! HELP!? BAHAHAHAHAHAH-"

*sound of gun is heard*

Well, that's the last you'll see of THAT audience member... *gets out james bond accent* oh, and my name is Life... Cassandra, Life.

What To Include

NAME: Do I really need to include an explanation of what this is?  ("yes") ... moron

GENDER: HOPEFULLY you know...

RACE:  This can vary depending on what you want your character to look like, their alignment, and their skills.  For example, if you want an evil character, don't pick a fairy.  A demon would be better.  If you want someone good at a bow and arrow, don't pick an ogre.

CLASS: This can vary from knights to thieves, depending on the path you want your character to take.  This choice can play a huge role in their personality, so take care when choosing.

AGE: Having your character young or old will play a large role in the further choices you make as well.  It will affect your history as well as the skills you have learned

PHYSICAL LOOKS: A good, detailed description of your character's looks is always helpful, and quite fun to relate.  It's always a good idea to add something unique, such as a small scar, etc... don't go with the flow of everyone else.  Be creative!  Your physical look can also say a lot about you... if you have a lot of scars, a battle hero, perhaps.  If you're starved looking, you're probably poor or have seen a lot of hardships.

PERSONALITY: This is probably the most important part of your character.  It makes up who they are, and is the deciding factor in everything they do, say, and think.  Someone really optimistic isn't going to be depressed very often, therefore would generally say encouraging things.  Someone quiet and wise isn't going to go around harassing people... this IS your foundation, so build it until you can't type anymore.  You can get really creative here, so let your mind flow.

HISTORY: The past of your character is perhaps another one of the most important things, as it can play a large role in how they act.  Most characters have one bad experience that has shaped their lives, and is still a conflict today.  Your history is helpful when creating a more in-depth character who you plan on playing over and over again, and is a sign of an advanced RPer.

PICTURE/S: Having a picture, even just one, of your character can be a huge help in visualizing your words.  Most people use them as avatar's, etc, giving people reading your posts a much easier picture of the whole RP since they know what your character looks like.  It's not a necessity, if you're good at describing, so don't worry if you can't find the right one.

Unique Characters

No one is going to want to RP with a character who's just the same as every other newbie RPer out there.  We've seen the ditzy blondes, the "all-powerful" mages, the superman hero's, and the sinisterly cold assassins.   You can use the previously stated character type, as hero's are romantic and ditzy blondes are fun to laugh at, because they do add to the RP.  However, you have to make it something unique.

Looks can make your character unique, although sometimes that isn't the best way to go.  There are more creative ways.

Your history, for example.  This can be nearly anything, and isn't that hard to think up.

Your personality can also be extremely unique... for example, someone extraordinarily quiet, but when they speak what they say is amazingly deep and interesting.  It could be fun to RP with.

Basically, don't go for what everyone else is doing.  Make your character something special, because in turn you'll get a lot more people to RP with you.

How Much Is Too Much

So, how much IS too much?  This question refers to the factors of what powers/skills/talents your character has.  Everyone hates a godmoder, so you have to be careful not to do so when creating your character.

All powerful mages are good and well, but not for most RP's.  Not only is it extremely frustrating to anyone RPing with you, but you lack creativity.  A better idea would be to start small, and have RP's planned out where you learn more spells and skills.  This gives you something to RP about, and can lead to a very rewarding experience.

Weakness/Flaws

Every character HAS TO HAVE a weakness or a flaw.  It's a fact of life, and that's all there is to it.  Whether this is a personality flaw or a physical flaw, your character has them.  This prevents godmoding at times, and also lets your imagination flow.  Perhaps their flaw is that they can't cast magic, or whenever they do they cause themselves to cough out toads...

It also makes people want to RP with you more if they know that your character isn't perfect.  There is nothing more annoying, trust me.

With conflict comes adventure, no conflict, no adventure.
