The word modem is a contraction of the word modulator-demodulator. Modem is a hardware device that establishes a
dial up connection to Internet Service Provider by accepting serial data (digital) from the computers and converts it to a modulated analog signal that can pass through the Public Telephone Network (PSTN). Modems came
into existence in the 1960s as a way to allow terminals to connect to computers over the phone lines. |
