Welcome to Old Albion, a tour of the Ancient and Sacred Landscapes of the British Isles.
The landscapes of Britain and Ireland are a wondrous mix of ancient and modern. Often, tumuli nestle unregarded in a landscape now dissected by roads and the trappings of modern living, but our history is visible all around you. To our ancestors, the whole earth was an organism, pulsating with life. They chose to worship their gods in wild, remote places, their temples open to the sky and to the wonder of the heavens. These places may have irrevocably changed over the millennia, but they still somehow retain all their atmosphere and mystery.
Although this site is by no means comprehensive, it aims to explore the significance and history of some of these sites they chose. But, remember photographs can never do these sites justice, as their purpose, now as then, is to provoke feeling. It is the locations themselves that evoke atmosphere, whether it is the mastery of looking out over Ireland at Tara, or the sweeping openness of the Marlborough Downs. Go and visit them these places! They really must be visited to comprehend the power of emotion that these landscapes had over our ancestors.
I hope to add to the following list eventually, but as the British Isles is so rich in these monuments, it would impossible to include them all. For now I present you with a selection of the best areas:
