America At War

Today America Declared War On Terrorism

On This Day In 2001 TERRORISTS laid waste to the citadels of American capitalism and defence yesterday with co-ordinated attacks that destroyed the World Trade Centre in New York and struck the Pentagon in Washington, killing thousands and spreading fear and chaos across America.

The onslaught with four hijacked aircraft was the bloodiest assault on the United States since the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.  Never before have so many innocent people been murdered at random in a single, minutely planned terrorist spectacle.

At about 9am (2pm BST) the towers of the Trade Centre in Lower Manhattan were hit one after the other by hijacked passenger aircraft, which tore gaping holes in the buildings and sent fireballs surging through the upper floors.

An hour later, with countless people trapped inside and rescue workers surrounding the buildings, first one tower collapsed and then, half an hour later, the other disintegrated into rubble. Moments before the buildings toppled, witnesses saw workers, some with their clothes aflame, leaping from the highest windows as smoke and dust billowed into the sky, enveloping the lower half of the island.

Four hundred firefighters were sent to the area; two hundred did not return. Seventy-eight police were also reported missing. Mike Smith, a fire marshal, described an apocalyptic scene like a war zone: “Everyone was screaming,” he said as dazed people, sobbing with shock, wandered through ash 3in deep on streets strewn with glass and rubble.

The Pentagon, nerve centre of the US military, also took a devastating direct hit from an aircraft and burst into flames, sending smoke billowing over the city. Terrified inhabitants poured from the capital as other explosions were reported near the State Department. Agents with automatic weapons sealed off and patrolled the area around the White House. Air Force fighter jets screamed overhead and all government buildings were evacuated.

“Terrorism against our nation will not stand,” President Bush declared as he left Florida to deal with the emergency. “Make no mistake, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts,” he said. Members of Congress also put on a show of defiance by massing on Capitol Hill to join hands and sing God Bless America.

Nevertheless, the Secret Service moved Mr. Bush and his Cabinet to secure facilities. The President rearranged plans to return to Washington and was flown aboard Air Force One to the safety of a military base in Louisiana. He later flew to the White House - accompanied by six Navy helicopters - from where he broadcast to the nation last night.

“Today our nation saw evil,” he said. “These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.”

Rescue workers in New York had been trying to evacuate the 110-storey twin towers, where about 50,000 people work, when the buildings collapsed. Rudolph Giuliani, the Mayor, said: “It’s an horrendous number of lives lost. The number of casualties will be more than any of us can bear.”

American Airlines said that its two hijacked aircraft had been carrying a total of 156 people. Two United Airlines airliners carrying 110 passengers also crashed after being hijacked.

Urgent calls went out for blood donations in New York as hospitals were overwhelmed by the injured and the American Red Cross was preparing to ship in emergency supplies from East Coast cities. New York subway lines were immediately shut down, trading on Wall Street was suspended and the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral was closed.

All air traffic was grounded across the US and Canada, and transatlantic flights were cancelled — one carrying the Duke of York turned around in mid-air. American flights were not expected to resume before tonight.

Flights over London were also suspended indefinitely and Tony Blair cancelled his speech at the TUC conference in Brighton, but appeared on the podium to express profound shock. The Tories announced that they had postponed the announcement of the result of the party’s leadership contest.

The Queen expressed her “total shock” as Britain offered all the means at its disposal to track down the perpetrators.

Other Western European leaders returned to their capitals for crisis meetings and expressed solidarity with America. But amid the international condemnation, Palestinian gunmen at refugee camps in Lebanon fired into the air to celebrate news of the attacks.

US forces in the Gulf were put on the highest level of alert while Israel closed its airspace to foreign aircraft and evacuated staff from diplomatic missions and Jewish institutions around the world. American nuclear facilities were also placed on the highest alert, and aircraft carriers were despatched to New York and Washington as a precaution.

Terrorist experts speculated that the attacks, plainly the result of substantial funding and many months of planning, had been the work of Osama bin Laden, the Islamic terrorist mastermind. The attack came as four of his followers await sentencing for bombing two embassies in Africa; a fifth is due to go on trial next week.

The millionaire Saudi dissident had given warning of “a big attack” against the US three weeks ago, according to sources and the Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said that American intelligence had intercepted communications between bin Laden supporters discussing the attacks. But Afghanistan’s ruling Taleban militia denied that bin Laden, who is living in that country, had played any role.

Within hours of the American attacks missiles were raining down on the Afghan capital, Kabul, but the strike did not appear to be retaliatory action by the US. Rather it was thought to be a rocket assault by the Northern Alliance, the military group bitterly opposed to Afghanistan’s regime. “This is not a US strike,” a Pentagon spokesman said.

Terrorism experts said that the American airline pilots would have allowed themselves to be killed or would have ditched their aircraft rather than carry out the sabotage, suggesting that the terrorists used their own trained pilots for the difficult aerial manoeuvre of ramming the two buildings. Passengers and a flight attendant called from three of the planes to describe how their aircraft were being forced down by hijackers armed with knives who stabbed the crew to take over the planes.

One of the aircraft that crashed into the Trade Center was American Airlines Flight 11, hijacked after take-off from Boston en route to Los Angeles. The airline said that it had lost another plane, carrying 64 people from Washington to Los Angeles.

American Airlines is already facing a $99,000 fine imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration for alleged security failures on six flights.

The pilot of the first plane to crash into the tower was identified as John Ogonowski, 50, a father of three whose wife is a flight attendant with American Airlines.

In Pennsylvania, a United Airlines flight from Newark to San Francisco crashed about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The plane was believed to have been intended to strike Camp David, the presidential retreat in the mountains of Maryland. Moments before the plane came down, a passenger made a desperate call to the emergency services from his mobile telephone, crying: “We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked.”
