THIS SITE MOVED A LONG TIME AGO!! But the HTML remained in extremely bad form http://www.polarhome.com:753/~juang/ |

Participants:
12 NOUJAIM, Karim
11 GHAMSARI, Nima
11 JUANG, Jason
11 NEWMAN, Zach
11 YEH, Connie ![]()
09 MarkITO (a very small Mark)
09 PECK, Chris
Seriously. That's it. Seven people. For those that don't know, you're supposed to have fifteen.
Note: There are bound to be some mistakes here. So many things go on simultaneously at Olympiad that it's impossible to know about all the last-minute changes that happened.
Boomilever - No entry
Design and build the lightest lever capable of supporting a given load.
This deserves some explanation. Karim and Zach spent a lot of time building a boomilver (although they made the base out of balsa wood - not particularly intelligent). But they forgot to drill the holes in it so it could be mounted on the wall. So they were going to do it there. But Zach, who was driving Markito and Karim, got lost on the way down there (we told him Hopple St., Exit 3, and, to his credit, he did get off at Exit 3, but on the wrong highway. ... oops) and so they didn't get there in time to impound it.
Bottle Rocket - No entry
BOTTLE ROCKET!! WHOOO!! Self-explanatory. No racist comments on the wings, please (*ahemdustinahem*).
Cell Biology - Juang and Ghamsari
Tell what you know about cells. And biology.
Chemistry Lab - Ghamsari and Yeh
Just like a chem lab at school, except you're actually allowed to leave when the period is over. AP Chem people know what I mean.
Compute This - Peck and Ito
Demonstrate the basics of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word, then research a topic on the Internet. And the topic is ....... how NOT to go to porn websites! ALWAYS use .org for non-profits!!
Designer Genes - No entry
Ouch. The pun has made this event lose its right to a description.
Disease Detectives - Noujaim and Yeh - Bronze Medal
No illness required.
Dynamic Planet - Newman and Peck - Gold Medal!
Earth science and stuff. Yeah. Go Zach.
Experimental Design - Newman, Noujaim and Peck
Design an experiment with given materials. Oh yeah... you have to perform it too, so it would be good if it worked.
Feathered Frenzy - Newman and Yeh
Identify birds and bird calls. You know what, never mind. Calls suck. Those should be taken out of the event.
Fossils - Newman and Peck
... no explanation needed, I suppose.
Mission: Possible - No entry
Design a Rube Goldberg device. The device should set off a series of energy transfers to accomplish a task, kind of like in the game "Mouse Trap." CCD has never entered this event.
Physics Lab - Noujaim
Perform lab tasks. (Seems simple enough.) Karim did this one alone after failing to enter Boomilever.
Polymer Detectives - Noujaim and Yeh
Talk about plastics until you die of boredom. And you will, believe me.
Practical Data Gathering - Ghamsari and Ito
Basically you measure stuff. But you have to also read the minds of the contest directors, since the directions are so vague that you can't possibly win fairly.
Qualitative Analysis - Juang and Ghamsari
Identify 9 white powders through chemical and physical tests. Note: Smoking or sniffing the powders is an infraction of safety rules.
Reach for the Stars - No entry
Answer questions about astronomy, and test your ability to read an event matrix. Mr. Koller certainly couldn't, and so we went to the wrong room and didn't get to compete. Oops.
Remote Sensing - Ito and Peck
Grope around for a device which controls the TV from afar. No seriously, I have no idea what this event actually is.
Robot Ramble - No entry
Design and build a robot capable of performing certain tasks and keeping a Bud Light cool.
Science of Fitness - Juang and Ito
Test your knowledge of things that you have forgotten (or in Markito's case, not learned at all). And for some reason the tiebreaker activity was to name one fruit or vegetable that starts with each letter of the alphabet.
Sounds of Music - No entry
It's music!! Everything is music!! Crash crash bang bang boom bom crash bing!!
The Wright Stuff - No entry
Design and build a propeller-powered airplane that takes off under the power of its own rubber-band-powered engine. Zach's plane got stolen, so we didn't enter. It didn't really fly anyway.
Write It, Do It - Juang and Yeh
Reconstruct a contraption using given materials and a description of the object written by a partner.
But we had fun!! Right!? And we pretended we were from Summit Country Day. Because they su... I mean ... we sucked.
