News & Plans

Welcome to Paul Acraman's web site.

As we head towards our second year of running the site, we have updated the Gallery with new paintings. If you would like to see the actual paintings, the Attic Studio can be visited as a 'viewing by appointment' gallery. For details, please go to the 'Contact Us' page.

The reaction to the site has been very positive and has encouraged me greatly.

Please send your thoughts and comments on either the paintings or the web site via the e-mail facility. Communications from gallery owners, fellow artists and people who appreciate art will be most welcome. Mail will be checked every day or so.

The purpose of this site is not just to sell pictures, although we have had an excellent response. We are mainly focusing on showing people what I do and why I do it.

WHY PAINT?

People paint for all kinds of different reasons and to make all kinds of different statements. Some people paint because "they just have to" or to keep themselves sane. Some paint to try to record the beauty or horrors of the world. Some are making a social statement about people, life, death, injustice, war or poverty. For others it may be a business or a relaxing hobby.

The reason I paint ties in very much with my work as an art tutor, in that I am helping people to see the incredible beauty of their surroundings. In my paintings I highlight aspects of light and colour which people often fail to notice.

It is also a much deeper personal experience than that. When I am out walking, driving, sailing or sketching, I am often so stunned by some facet of light, colour or movement that I have to try to capture some of the emotions I feel. This can be a massive challenge - to bring an emotional context into a painting.

When I listen to music, some harmonies can bring tears to my eyes, some rhythms can make it impossible to keep still and the emotional content of lyrics can work like poetry in the soul. I strive to make some of these things happen through the medium of my art, to make the paintings "sing". I'm only just beginning to work towards the huge challenge of these aspects of art but I'm looking forward to taking them as far as I can. Maybe I should take up singing as well!
