Hardy worked here for the architect Crickmay for a year. He started writing poetry and began ‘Desperate Remedies’. He used the seaside town as a setting for some of his short stories e.g. ‘Destiny in a Blue Cloak and the famous poem ‘Great Things’ was set in Budmouth.
It was on the beach that Bathsheba had a rendezvous with Sargeant Troy in ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’.
In ‘The Return of the Native’, Budmouth was the place that Eustacia Vye longed to reside at as she hated Egdon Heath so.

The beach at Weymouth (on a particularly cold winter’s day!) In the summer it can become very crowded indeed!
