The setting for ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ is approximately five miles from Dorchester. It was, at Upper Weatherbury Farm (roughly modelled on Waterston House), close to Puddletown, that Bathsheba Everdene took on the role of farmer when her Uncle died and bequeathed her the living. The barn where the revelling took place was based on the large tythe barn at Cerne Abbas (Abbot’s Cernel). Warren’s Malthouse sadly no longer exists.
It was at St. Mary’s church that a gargoyle spouted rain water on to Fanny Robin’s grave destroying Troy’s floral effort.
Hardy’s cousin, Tryphena Sparks lived here as well as several other relations.
The sequel to ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’, entitled, “Weatherbury Farm” also uses Puddletown as a setting for the action. It is here, outside the Kings Arms, Weatherbury, that Bathsheba and her friend Louisa set up a stall to inform the residents of their intention to form a support group for Union members' wives. Gabriel and Ben Tallboys utilise the King’s Arms to discuss their ambitious plans over a jar of ale. Outside the inn a fracas occurs between union members and non-union members.
Weatherbury Church sees the christening of the Oak’s children and later their daughter is married there..
