Neil Diamond Tribute

My Background:

I was born in Highcliffe, Hampshire (Now Dorset) on 11 May 1965, second child of Mick & Monica.  I had quite a normal upbringing in the south of the New Forest.  Me and my mates spent most of our time either in the woods playing war games or on the beach messing around in the surf.

After school I took to the motor trade as an apprentice mechanic.  This love was driven on by my love of motorcycles, in particular, motorcycle jumping.  By this time I'd already met my bike role model, Eddie Kidd, and was deeply inspired by his antics with his bikes.  Although Eddie doesn't ride anymore, he is still a major scource of inspiration to me.  He is by far one of the most courageous people I have ever known.  I would like to say I have been in contact with Eddie just recently and I wish him well in everything he does.

Anyway, 1983 came along and I joined the Army, 1st Battalion, Royal Hampshire Regiment and became Private George, following in my fathers footsteps.  My Army career was launched and I was soon off to the centre of, what was then, the Cold War and West Berlin.  I lead the normal life of a soldier, drinking lots of beer and wasting my money but having a lot of fun.  Then one night my friend, Steve Thompson and I went to a Neil Diamond Concert in a big open arena.  I didn't know what to expect, I had a mate who's dad was into Neils music but apart from 'Sweet Caroline' I didn't know much about him.

A couple hours later I was speachless, I'd just watched a Legend perform and he had totally blown my socks off.

I went straight back to my room and started to learn to play Neil's songs on my guitar.  To cut a long story short, I ended up playing in a few bands, including, my favourite, 'The Sound Of Summer'.  This was quite a funky rock 'n' roll band born in the Falkland Islands playing lots of really cheesy stuff but it was a lot of fun.  A BFBS Radio DJ became one of the bands friends and quite often gave us lots of plugs on the air.  I'm glad to say he has gone on to bigger things and he is now a BBC Radio DJ operating on BBC Radio Norfolk.  Long live the Steven Bumfry Breakfast Show.

My music career slowed a little due to Army commitments but I still found time to play in the odd local pub for a laugh.

My career in the Army saw me as a Military Driving Instructor teaching anything from cars to large goods vehicles.  In April 2002 I was sent to teach a group of soldiers from the T.A.  in Kent. On my first day I turned up at the barracks all keen and ready to go.  I walked over to meet the guys I was going to teach on the course.  There, sat on the back of a small lorry was a lovely looking girl called Tracy.  Instantly I was going all weak and daft.  This was the girl I'd been looking for!!!  After making a fool of myself for a fortnight over this girl during the course, we arranged to meet up once the course was over.  To cut a long story short Tracy is now my wife, we have 4 lovely kids, a fantastic house and a very bright future together.  Tracy has been my strength since the day we met and I love her to bits.

My Hobbies:

Falconry;

I'm a real big lover of birds of prey and a bit of a spotter of local raptors in our country.  Constantly watching Buzzards, Kestrels, Barn and Tawny Owls and just recently a Goshawk.  I love going to flying displays and watching them being professionally handled and flown.  Amazing!!!

Rugby;

England & London Irish Supporter.  Used to play a bit with a couple of various teams for fun. Loved Seven's, very fast game with lots of tries.  Roll on the Rugby World Cup 2007!!!

Motorcycles;

Love Motocross and Jumping.
I dont ride anymore but used to play about on a Honda CR250 and more recently a Suzuki DRZ 400 (Quite a beast) to name just two of my favourite bikes.  I go to the local meetings with the kids on a regular basis, not sure who gets more excited, them or me!!!!

Surfing

Dont do it know but still watch it on telly.  Used to Surf with a great friend, Steve Murton, who also used to go to Eddie Kidd's shows with me and help out.  He still in the water at the ripe ol' age of 40.  Haven't seen him for years but he's always in my thoughts as the best friend I ever had.
